COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a new Horror Sci-Fi movie that has the most gorgeous and crazy look. It’s based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft which should tell you something about what to expect.

Also, it stars Nicolas Cage in a role that seems absolutely perfect for him. If you enjoy horror sci-fi then this really should suit your movie wants.

Nicolas Cage as a cult genre icon

Nicolas Cage especially is perfectly crazy for this horror sci-fi movie. He has become somewhat of a genre film icon these past few years by starring in some movies that have reached cult levels popularity. Color Out of Space is actually by the producers of both the cult movie Mandy and the horror-comedy Mom and Dad. It really seems like this is the perfect niche for Cage who just shines when he goes all in.

Also, he never seems to be vain in any way. In fact, just as we were commenting on his hair (as you do with him as much as with Trump), he mentions it himself on screen. “Why didn’t anyone give me a comb?!”. Yeah, we’ve been wondering that for years. But how cool is it that he has so much insight and humor that he calls himself out on this. I love it!

This is what he should be doing and not the weird horror movies that should be camp, but doesn’t quite allow itself to go there. Yes, I’m talking about Primal which was truly dreadful. Check out our review of Primal here, if you dare >

Color Out of Space (2019) Horror Review

Loved the entire cast of Color Out of Space

Color Out of Space stars Nicolas Cage who even has a wife close to his own age in this movie. She is portrayed wonderfully by Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), who is almost exactly one year young than him in real life. The two work really well as a couple and this makes the story work from the beginning.

Their three kids are portrayed by some familiar faces as well. The youngest son, Jack, is played by Julian Hilliard. He did a wonderful job as the young Luke in The Haunting of Hill House. We’ll soon see him in even more genre productions since he’s in The Conjuring 3 and the upcoming series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Don’t Miss: Everything we know about The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It movie here >

As the middle child, Benny, we have actor Brendan Meyer. You might recognize him from the Netflix series The OA or his Fear the Walking Dead role. The latter was most prominent in the web series Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462 with one-minute episodes.

Finally, we have Madeleine Arthur as their daughter, Lavinia. You’ll soon see her in the Snowpiercer series, which I am really looking forward to. Both the actual show and her role in it.

Watch Color Out of Space if you love H.P. Lovecraft

Color Out of Space is directed by Richard Stanley who hasn’t directed a feature film movie since the infamous The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). Richard Stanley also wrote the screenplay which is based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft.

Also, we have Scarlett Amaris onboard as a co-writer of shorts. Scarlett Amaris and Richard Stanley have worked together in the past on a segment for The Theatre Bizarre horror anthology from 2011. This was her first writing credit, so she started her career with him.

If you love H.P. Lovecraft stories in all their horror sci-fi glory, then you really should enjoy Color Out of Space. It is such a gorgeous movie that might feel a bit long but I wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on any of the crazy scenes. I hope Nicolas Cage will continue working with XYZ to make these amazing genre films. It’s where he shines and he does seem to love it!

Color Out of Space is out in theaters from January 24, 2020.

Plot

After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
