There’s been a concerning lack of news on the upcoming Jason Voorhees movie Friday the 13th (2017), but now a new horror director is in talks to direct!

First, David Bruckner (V/H/S, Southbound) was at the helm of the movie, but he skipped it at the end of 2015. Now Breck Eisner (The Crazies, The Last Witch Hunter) is negotiating with Paramount Pictures to take over the duties.

Funny thing is, Eisner’s father, Michael Eisner, ran Paramount Pictures in the early 80s, back when Jason was a big thing. So it almost seems like it’s fate for Breck to be taking over the reigns.

Earlier there was a lot of talk about making a found footage movie, but luckily that idea was knifed (oh yeah, pun intended). Now Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) has made a script for Friday the 13th, that producer Brad Fuller has commented on:

““Aaron’s story has great characters…. You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward.”

The plot is still unknown, but it has been revealed that the story will be an origins-story of sorts with Jason and his mom, Pamela. Fuller said the following:

”Origin-ish, but it’’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’’ve seen before.””

Also, there’s rumors about Jason’s dad, Elias Voorhees, showing up in the movie. Incidentally, this will be the 13th movie about Jason Voorhees.

The last time we saw Jason was in 2009 with Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [2003]) at the helm. Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t exactly a big success. Neither critics nor fans showed it much love. Maybe that’s why we’ve had to wait so long for a new Jason Voorhees movie.

Friday the 13th (2017) is set for a theatrical release Friday January 13th, 2017. If they won’t make that date, we can probably expect the new date to be Friday October 13th, 2017.

Honestly, it seems much more fitting with a release right before Halloween, so we’re hoping they hit that mark instead. Better to wait longer and finally get a good movie in the Friday the 13th franchise.

Meanwhile, the original Jason Voorhees actor, Kane Hodder, has just signed on to chase witches and vampires in the upcoming Witchula.

I usually keep up-to-date with all the horror news, and make sure Heaven of Horror share the best and latest trailers for upcoming horror movies. I love all kinds of horror. My love affair started when I watched 'Poltergeist' alone around the age of 10. I slept like a baby that night and I haven't stopped watching horror movies since. The crazy slasher stuff isn't really for me, but hey, to each their own. I guess I just like to be scared and get jump scares, more than being disgusted and laughing at the grotesque. Also, Korean and Spanish horror movies made within the past 10-15 years are among my absolute favorites.
