The 3rd Eye 2 is a new horror movie on Netflix. Its original title is Mata Batin 2 and is directed by Rocky Soraya – just like the first movie was.

The ending of The 3rd Eye 2 should require no explanation. And, of course, the ending of a Rocky Soraya movie always more than hints at yet another sequel, so we’ll probably be getting The 3rd Eye 3 before you know it.

Rocky Soraya has made quite a lot of horror movies in recent years and he certainly does have a style. It’s just not one I’m too crazy about. Still, sometimes he hits closer to my taste.

Find out if this is one of those times in our The 3rd Eye 2 review below.

Non-stop jumpscare galore!

The 3rd Eye 2 opens with a recap of what the third eye is. Also, it’s made very clear that those with their third eye opened should help others. Oh yeah, and from the beginning, we also learn how those with their third eye open can perform a ritual to see the future and past and various other things.

The 3rd Eye 2 is horror but it’s also sci-fi and fantasy in that sense. It works for the story, so why not.

What doesn’t really work (for me anyway) is the endless use of “jumpscare coming up”-music. There’s a near-constant sense of urgency that gets tired pretty fast. Also, all the dread and horror happens so quickly. There’s virtually no build-up which is usually what makes horror movies like The Conjuring (or any Korean horror movie) work so well.

The 3rd Eye 2 has a runtime just shy of two hours, but just one hour in, you will already have gotten more horror/scares than from all the movies in The Conjuring universe combined. This might sound good, but it really isn’t.

It’s like sprinting a marathon – or watching the storyline from at least three movies in just one movie.

The 3rd Eye 2 (2019) Review – Horror on Netflix

The cast of The 3rd Eye 2

Jessica Mila from The 3rd Eye is back for this sequel as Alia. This is only her fourth credit on IMDb and I can’t really say what kind of actress she is since I’ve only seen her portray this one character.

If you’ve watched the movie Sabrina about a creepy doll (also by the director of this film), then you should recognize actor Jeremy Thomas as well. He portrays Mr. Fadli in The 3rd Eye 2.

Overall, you probably won’t watch this for the cast unless you’re from Indonesia. Or, of course, a fan of Indonesian movies and series. It doesn’t matter whether you recognize any of the actors. What matters is the story and that’s usually where Rocky Soraya movies have quite a few problems.

The 3rd Eye 2 is no exception. However, the production quality is very impressive. I will give him that!

The 3rd Eye 2 (or Mata Batin 2) was directed and co-written by Rocky Soraya. He seems to be like a regular Energizer Bunny when it comes to making horror movies. And you can find a lot of them on Netflix already.

With this sequel to The 3rd Eye (org. title Mata Batin), he’s continuing to work on his second franchise. The other big franchise by Soraya is The Doll which also got the spin-off, Sabrina. Almost like an Indonesian Annabelle except not nearly as well written or produced.

My favorite so far is definitely the first The Doll which is why I expected too much from him in the past. Especially after the last movie, I watched by him which is titled Suzzanna: Buried Alive and received one of our (relatively few) 1-star ratings.

These days, it seems like the goal is simply to make many movies rather than good movies. Or maybe (just maybe), Rocky Soraya simply isn’t my kind of filmmaker. I do tend to like horror productions from various Asian countries (especially South Korea), but these feel too much like B-movie versions.

Then again, if you’ve enjoyed some of his previous movies, I think you’ll enjoy The 3rd Eye 2 as well. In that case, just enjoy the fact that the latest movie from Rocky Soraya is on Netflix now.

The 3rd Eye 2 is out on Netflix in the US, Canada, UK and several other countries from June 13, 2019.

Plot

Working in an orphanage, Alia meets teen Nadia, who says she hears a strange voice in the walls. When they try to find the source, things go very wrong.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
