NINE PERFECT STRANGERS is a new Hulu limited series. It’s a thriller, drama, mystery and it’s got an extremely addictive storyline. From episode 1, you should be hooked. Still, I can’t complain that the first three episodes are released in one go since it’s very binge-worthy!

Also, you’re bound to be impressed with this awesome ensemble cast. Most portray characters you’d expect them to, but many of them have quite a few surprises up their sleeves. The tagline “All is not well” is very appropriate!

Awesome characters and great dialogue

As it was proven with Big Little Lies (created by the same team), the intriguing storyline is driven by great characters and vibrant dialogue. Hell, this alone is so fascinating to watch that I almost wouldn’t mind if there wasn’t a mystery element as well.

I said almost.

Because the mystery part of this thriller is what keeps you on the edge of your seat while watching. The characters and dialogue just make the ride there so much fun. Imagine nine perfect strangers (yeah, the title is accurate even if some of them arrive together), who need to heal and transform. All is not well, indeed!

Oh yeah, and all of them are city people going to a nature-focused wellness resort. And most of them have quite a lot of money!

Nine Perfect Strangers – Review [Hulu]

I love this cast!

Before even hitting play on the very first episode of Nine Perfect Strangers, I expected to love this mini-series. First due to the writer and creator. Second (and even more so) due to this awesome cast! Headed by Nicole Kidman (The Undoing) in many ways, but don’t expect her to take up much space in the beginning.

After all, we do have nine key characters to introduce as well. Also, there are employees at the resort. Last thing first, the resort employees are Delilah, Yao, and Glory. Portrayed by Tiffany Boone (The Midnight Sky), Manny Jacinto (Brand New Cherry Flavor), and Zoe Terakes (Wentworth) respectively.

The nine resort guests include a family consisting of Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Asher Keddie (The Cry), and Grace Van Patten (Mayday). A young couple consisting of Melvin Gregg (Snowfall) and Samara Weaving (The Babysitter).

Finally, the four single guests are portrayed by Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Bobby Cannavale (Jolt), Luke Evans (The Alienist), and Regina Hall (Scary Movie, When the Bough Breaks). The two first and the two last ends up getting into quite a few confrontations early on.

Watch Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu!

There are 8 episodes in the Nine Perfect Strangers mini-series. It premieres with its first three episodes and then continues with weekly episodes. The final episode is out on September 22, so this is when you’ll be able to binge-watch the entire limited series if you prefer that.

Jonathan Levine is the director on all 8 episodes and you should already be familiar with his name. He did the zombie horror-comedy romance Warm Bodies (2013) and the surprise hit Long Shot (2019) starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen.

The entire series is an adaption of a Liane Moriarty novel and created by David E. Kelley. The two also worked together on Big Little Lies which was another series based on one of her books. And yes, that one also starred fellow Aussie, Nicole Kidman. Don’t miss out on this very addictive plot. I cannot wait to see the final episodes!

Nine Perfect Strangers premieres on Hulu on August 18, 2021.

Plot

Based on The New York Times bestselling book by author Liane Moriarty, “Nine Perfect Strangers” takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this 10-day retreat is the resort’s director, Masha, a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies. However, these nine “perfect” strangers have no idea what is about to hit them.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
