The Alienist is a new tv show by the creator of True Detective, Cary Fukunaga. The show is focused on the hunt for a serial killer, killing young boys in the 19th century.
The Alienist is based on a series of books by Caleb Carr, taking place in 1890. The show is very much about criminal psychology. It stars Daniel Brühl, Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans in the leading roles.
Brühl is playing a criminal psychologist, who teams up with a journalist (Evans) and an aspiring police detective (Fanning) to solve the murders of several young prostituted boys.
Cary Fukunaga had great success with season 1 of True Detective and was originally supposed to direct IT Part 1. As we all know, it didn’t turn out that way. Apparently due to creative differences, which instead opened up for him to work on this new show.
Fukunaga has both produced, written and directed The Alienist in collaboration with other creative forces. James Hawes (Black Mirror) and David Petrarca (Game of Thrones, Jessica Jones) will also direct.
The Alienist will make its debut on TNT January 22, 2018.
