MY NAME IS VENDETTA is a new Netflix thriller from Italy (org. title: Il mio nome è vendetta). The story is mafia-based and all about revenge. In other words, this thriller is chockful of crime and action as well. Including a lot of very violent deaths!

Very fast-paced action thriller

My Name is Vendetta is described as a “fast-paced action, survival and revenge film set in Northern Italy”, which is absolutely spot-on. You won’t have to wait long before the action (as in the killing) begins.

Also, this is not for the faint of heart. The deaths are brutal as are the fights. Not only because this is a revenge movie, but because this is set in the world of the mafia. It’s kill or be killed, which is the core theme of this story.

We meet the 17-year-old Sofia, who plays hockey (she’s a champion), enjoys off-road driving lessons, and spending time with her boyfriend. All in all, a pretty normal teenager. Of course, all of that changes when she posts a picture of her father on Instagram.

Very much against his wishes, I might add, since he has been hiding for decades.

The ending of My Name is Vendetta is quite satisfying

The consequences happen fast when Sofia’s mother and uncle are brutally killed. This is when Sofia learns the truth about his father, which – surprise, surprise – has to do with the mafia.

All of this happens within the first 10 minutes or so, which is one hell of a way to begin a story. Following this extreme opening, the one goal of Sofia’s father is to keep his daughter safe.

Will he be successful? Well, you’ll have to watch the movie to find out, but I will tell you that I very much enjoyed the final scene of this film. In so many ways – including the ending of My Name is Vendetta – this is a perfect action thriller for a Friday night.

This new Netflix thriller is written and directed by Cosimo Gomez. His debut as a director came in 2017 with Ugly Nasty People (org. title: Brutti e cattivi). Sandrone Dazieri and Andrea Nobile co-wrote the movie.

Alessandro Gassman (Transporter 2) stars as the main protagonist while Ginevra Francesconi (The Nest) plays Sofia. The role of the big mafia patriarch is played by Remo Girone. You may know him from many different movies. He’s been in both US, UK, German, French, and Italian movies.

If you’re in the mood for a classic revenge movie with a fast pace (and a crisp runtime of 90 minutes), then be sure to check out this one on Netflix.
