5 movies to watch at Fantasia 2021:
Coming Home In The Dark
COMING HOME IN THE DARK is a New Zealand road movie into hell combined with a home-invasion thriller.
A school teacher is forced to confront a brutal act from his past when a pair of ruthless drifters takes him and his family on a nightmare road-trip.
Midnight
MIDNIGHT is a thriller from South Korea, and it’s no secret that we LOVE those!
A wave of murders hits the city. The media suspects foreign workers, but apart from speculation, there are no leads. After a longer-than-expected business meeting, Kyung-mi heads off to meet her mother, who is waiting for her at a remote location so that they can get together easily.
Meanwhile, Kyung-mi is spied on by a mysterious masked man, who decides instead to follow a young woman, So-jung, who crosses paths with them. When Kyung-mi finally arrives at her meeting place, she sees So-jung bloody and asking for help.
However, she is deaf, just like her mother, and cannot call for help. Lurking in the shadows, the murderer, Do-sik, has just identified his new prey and sets off in pursuit. Her deafness makes her vulnerable, but she knows all the resources at her disposal and manages to escape to her mother.
Knowing the handicap of his future victim, Do-sik removes his mask and connects with them despite the presence of the police, patiently waiting for the opportunity to satisfy his murderous thirst.
The Deep House
THE DEEP HOUSE is a Horror movie by French directors Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury (INSIDE, 2007 and AMONG THE LIVING, 2014). That alone is enough to make me curious – even though I didn’t care for their new movie Kandisha.
A young and modern couple who go to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on social media undergoes a serious change of plans when the couple enter the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of the sea and their presence awakens a spirit dark that haunts the house.
The Night House
Ever since I saw the trailer for THE NIGHT HOUSE I was intrigued! I love the freaky twists and turns, so I really can’t wait to see this movie.
Reeling from the unexpected and shocking suicide of her husband, schoolteacher Beth is left alone in the remote lakeside home he built for them. Beth valiantly tries to hold it together – but when the nightmares come (and they do!), that becomes increasingly difficult.
Not helping: disturbing visions of a presence in the home calling to her, beckoning her with a ghostly allure. Other unexplained phenomena pop up, like the stereo system bursting to ear-splitting life during sleeping hours, and the “night house” across the lake that strangely appears and disappears.
Against the advice of her concerned friends, Beth begins digging into her husband’s belongings, yearning for answers. What she finds are secrets both bizarre and frightening – a mystery the frazzled widow is determined to unravel.
When I Consume You
We reviewed THEY LOOK LIKE PEOPLE by Perry Blackshear in 2016 – and we loved it! Now he’s back with WHEN I CONSUME YOU so we can’t wait to see if he can deliver the same high quality this time.
Just beyond the shadows, in the corner of your vision, just out of sight, his yellow eyes lurk. Down and out, and grasping to stay above water, Wilson Shaw and his sister Daphne struggle to make it in the world.
When a supernatural figure appears to be behind their history of misfortune, Wilson must rethink his family, his place in the world, and what he knows to be real. Wilson is forced to muster all his strength, to face off against forces he does not fully understand, in a desperate bid for redemption, for his sister and himself.
