Another Life is a new Netflix sci-fi series which should please most fans of the genre. It has such a classic Sci-Fi story with a style that will feel familiar instantly.

The new Netflix series is starring the Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck from the iconic sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica) and it’s a treat to see her on my screen again. She is always such a badass but in Another Life, she seems to be surrounded by spoiled brats to a very large degree.

Also, I will say that already in episode 1 of Another Life there is a pretty surprising character death. That’s not to say you won’t see this character again in episode 2, but they do remain dead. Quite the shocker!

Katee Sackhoff is back in Another Life

The absolute star of Another Life is Katee Sackhoff and you can’t ask for a better star for this new Netflix series. Of course, you might know Katee Sackhoff even if you’re not a fan of the classic sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica (she played “Starbuck” in the reboot).

For horror fans, Katee Sackhoff is probably better known for her role in the Mike Flanagan movie Oculus (2013) or even Don’t Knock Twice (2016).

If you know Katee Sackhoff and don’t care for her, then don’t expect to enjoy Another Life. Honestly, the main reason to watch this new Netflix series is because she is back to portraying an awesome sci-fi hero.

Unfortunately, most other characters in Another Life are very under-developed and tend to make very stupid choices. It feels like  they’ve taken the cast of any Big Brother house and sent into space. And Niko (Katee Sackhoff) is there to guide the ungrateful youngsters.

Another Life Season 1 Review Netflix Series

The classic Sci-Fi series look

Unlike many Sci-Fi movies, which tend to have the most brilliant and gorgeous effects, Sci-Fi series tend to have another look and feel. The effects are often just a bit off. They’re not bad, but they certainly are not great either. However, they all seem to have the same look and feel. One that hasn’t changed much in a decade or two.

Unlike a horror series like The Haunting of Hill House, which had awesome effects, Sci-Fi series like Lost in Space have another look. Almost like when cartoon characters have four fingers instead of five. As if to remind us that this isn’t real.

Okay, I don’t know the exact reasoning, but I do know that I am not a fan. It’s always something that distracts me because I wonder why they haven’t put more effort into making these effects. My point (and I do actually have one) is that this is a personal pet peeve that I need to mention, but most sci-fi fans will probably thinks it’s the way it should be.

Watch Another Life on Netflix now!

Aaron Martin is the creator of Another Life and he has a very interesting resume on IMDb. He previously worked on both the Slasher TV series and the Killjoys series. In general, I think you’ll really enjoy Another Life if you’re a fan of other Sci-Fi series such as KilljoysLost in Space or even Star Trek.

To me, it becomes almost too stereotypical and I get annoyed with the way things constantly go wrong. I am not a fan of the constant life-threatening drama. It gets in the way of actual character development which is something I prefer.

Then again, I was a big fan of Battlestar Galactica and truly enjoy watching Katee Sackhoff take charge. She is more than capable of carrying a show and is the main reason to watch this new Netflix series.

All 10 episodes of Another Life season 1 is out on Netflix globally from July 25, 2019.

Plot

After a massive alien artifact lands on Earth, Niko Breckinridge leads an interstellar mission to track down its source and make first contact.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
