WHO KILLED JILL DANDO? is a new Netflix true-crime documentary series in three episodes. Even if you don’t know who Jill Dando was, the docu-series does an excellent job of introducing her. It’s easy to see why she was such a popular and beloved TV presenter, which also explains why her death came as such a shock.

Obviously, any murder is a shock, but this happened in broad daylight, in front of her home. Execution style and yet with no witnesses or CCTV footage to help the police. While someone does get convicted for her murder, the case doesn’t end there. It is, to this day, officially an unsolved murder.

A crime that shocked the UK and the world

37-year-old British broadcasting star, Jill Dando, was murdered on the morning of April 26, 1999. She was killed by a single bullet on the doorstep of her London home. There are no witnesses and no one even heard anything, which is just one of the strange elements of this case.

Obviously, the murder of Jill Dando resulted in one of the largest homicide investigations in the history of the UK. Often we watch a documentary – usually about a case from the US – and someone states; Everyone in the world was talking about this case. And well, more often than not, it really isn’t the case. In fact, in several instances, it isn’t even covered in other US states.

For the Murdaugh Murders, this was the case at first, but ultimately (due to both podcasts and documentaries), people worldwide were actually paying attention. For Who Killed Jill Dando? we see news coverage from both British and American news that covers her murder.

Both because it’s such a shocking case and because Princess Diana died a few years earlier and Jill Dando was very much the same type. Where Princess Diana’s death was a tragic accident, Jill Dando was murdered. This made for a different kind of story – one where a killer needed to be caught and brought to justice.

Who Killed Jill Dando? – Review | Netflix Documentary Series

The Lady Di of Television

When watching Who Killed Jill Dando? it’s very easy to see the resemblance between her and Princess Diana. They have a similar hairstyle – which is actually something that comes up, as her hairstylist is interviewed – and they were so approachable and loving. Jill Dando was perfect as a TV presenter as she could interview a teenager on the street as well as the biggest stars.

She was also the host of the BBC programme Crimewatch which helped catch many criminals. Could this be related to her death? It’s certainly possible.

Also, it is brutal that a clip is used both during the beginning and as a closing for this true crime documentary. In the clip, Jill Dando is asked by a group of children, if she isn’t scared of doing Crimewatch due to the violent crimes covered. She gives the perfect answers to the kids, which is essentially that the crimes covered are very rare, so she’s not afraid of them coming to her doorstep.

Something to that effect, as I am very much paraphrasing. However, the gist is the same which only makes it even more brutal that one of these very rare crimes did come to her doorstep.

Watch the Who Killed Jill Dando? documentary on Netflix now!

The Who Killed Jill Dando? Netflix docu-series was directed by four-time BAFTA nominee Marcus Plowright (Muslim Drag Queens) and executive produced by Emma Cooper (The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann).

Unlike some of the other cases covered in true crime documentaries, this one manages to paint a full picture. There’s no assumption that the viewer already knows about this case, so everything is revisited with fresh eyes. Also, the interviews in the documentary are relevant and insightful. Including family and friends of Jill Dando as well as suspects.

Despite the true crime mystery being more than two decades old, there’s still hope that new information can be brought forward. As Jill Dando’s own brother told The Times “Someone might know something”. Hopefully, this Netflix documentary series can help new witnesses come forward. In any case, this docu-series will ensure that Jill Dando is never forgotten by the public.

The Who Killed Jill Dando? docu-series is out on Netflix on September 26, 2023.

Plot

Revisit the shocking 1999 murder of beloved TV presenter Jill Dando, which continues to mystify experts and the public, in this in-depth documentary.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
