The Plagues of Breslau is a new Netflix crime-thriller from Poland. You may already be familiar with the Polish TV series The Mire which was recently added to Netflix. If not, you might want to check it out. It’s a brutal and fascinating series.

This new Polish movie on Netflix is about a police officer hunting a serial killer who kills someone in Breslau every day at 6 PM. If you’re a fan of serial killer plots, then this is absolutely worth watching. Also, it’s only around an hour and a half, so it’s quick to watch.

Amazing female characters

One of the things you’ll take away from watching The Plagues of Breslau will no doubt be the truly brilliant female characters. Sure, they’re kick-ass in various ways, but they’re not necessarily very likable. And I love it!

We’ve seen male characters like that for decades and it’s time to let the freak flag fly for the female characters as well. They’re broody, angry, strong, smart, and have weak spots. Just like all their male counterparts. Don’t get me wrong though, there are some amazing male characters in The Plagues of Breslau as well.

The one thing, I am not a fan of is the hairstyle of the main protagonist, officer Helena Rus. It’s just very unpractical and weird to me. However, that is the one thing that doesn’t really work for me… and actually, it does work for this quirky character.

Patryk Vega directed and co-wrote The Plagues of Breslau. I don’t think I’m familiar with any of Patryk Vega’s previous work, but he has directed a lot of TV series and movies for the past 15 years.

Also, he tends to write or co-write most of the productions he directs. The co-writer on The Plagues of Breslau is Sylwia Koperska-Mrozinska and this is her only writing credit (according to IMDb anyway).

To me, this is the kind of crime-thriller that I hope will get people into watching more foreign productions. It’s a fascinating and entertaining plot that most fans of crime and thriller movies should enjoy. Also, while it is very dangerous to make these comparisons, it deserves being labeled a Se7en-style movie. Yes, it really is worth your time!

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
