JAGGED MIND is a new Hulu horror movie with a supernatural mystery at its core and an intense thriller driver. It gets very dark and brutal. And yes, all the main characters are women as this is an LGBTQ love story.

Actually, it’s more of a domestic violence horror story. The signs are there early on, but they become increasingly clear as the supernatural time loop element comes into focus.

A dark time loop story

In Jagged Mind, we meet Billie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) who is having an issue with her memory. Or rather, she has a lot of black holes in her memory. These are accompanied by an intense feeling of deja vu.

Early on, we find out that she is in fact relieving the same first date over and over again. But why and how can she stop this eerie time loop that is slowly, but surely, breaking her mind?

The supernatural element in Jagged Mind has a more physical (and folklore-based) origin than in most other time loop stories. Such as Happy Death Day which is often the first that comes to mind for me.

Jagged Mind – Review | Hulu Horror Movie

An LGBTQ (horror) love story

There are elements of Jagged Mind where the LGBTQ characters do seem happy. However, as we discover the extremely manipulative ways of Billie’s girlfriend, it’s difficult to see anything but abuse.

This story gets very dark. Also, it gets bloody and brutal. Not in an “in your face” kind of way, but one that helps build the story.

I never really understood why Billie would be interested in Alex, as I don’t feel any real chemistry. However, to be fair, as the story evolves, this may actually be very intentional. Every actor in this story delivers a good performance.

Unfortunately, the overall story feels more like an episode of a horror anthology than a stand-alone movie. The runtime is good at 1 hour and 28 minutes, but it does feel a tad slow. And, obviously, it is quite repetitive due to the time loop story.

Watch Jagged Mind on Hulu

The new Hulu horror movie is directed by Kelley Kali and this is the first movie of hers, I’ve watched, She’s done mostly short films, but does have another feature film currently in post-production.

The writer of the screenplay is Allyson Morgan and she has also written mostly short films and for series. Including an episode of the horror anthology Bite Size Halloween.

Overall, I definitely found this horror movie worth watching. I just wish I had felt a better connection between the two main characters. Instead, I have a hard time believing they would ever get together and that does mess with the premise quite a lot.

Jagged Mind premieres on Hulu on June 15, 2023, and internationally on Disney+ at a later date.

Plot

When Billie finds herself reliving different versions of the same first date, she must break out of a series of loops created by her manipulative ex-girlfriend.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
