DEATH AND OTHER DETAILS is a new Hulu series (also on Disney+) with 10 episodes to the season. It’s a murder mystery and it’s rated TV-MA, so you should expect both violent and steamy scenes with this one.
The cast is wonderful and offers several very intriguing characters. No one is entirely good or bad, which is something I always enjoy. The nuances are important. If you like crime plots and mysteries, this is for you!

The world’s greatest detective
In Death and Other Details, the world’s greatest detective isn’t the Belgian Hercule Poirot. Instead of British Kenneth Branagh attempting a French accent, we get Mandy Patinkin sporting a British accent as detective Rufus Cotesworth.
And I found myself really enjoying this character from the very beginning, so we’re off to a good start.
The murder mystery happens amid the global elite having a business vacation on a gorgeous cruise ship. Here we meet a lot of intriguing characters. Then a murder happens and we get to know the characters!
Death and Other Details centers on brilliant and restless Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), who becomes the prime suspect in a locked-room murder mystery. Fortunately, she knows the man asked to solve the mystery: Rufus Cotesworth.
The amazing detective is someone Imogene has known since she was a young girl. Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) was tasked with solving the violent murder of her mother.
The two ended on very bad terms, but will now have to work together. Fortunately, Imogene is as sharp as the detective, which he knows, so they make a strong team. Even if they never quite trust each other.
A gorgeous setting for crime
The setting for Death and Other Details is a lavishly restored Mediterranean ocean liner. And the suspects? Well, you know the drill: Everyone is a suspect! Both the rich guests and the hardworking crew members.
For Imogene, solving this murder mystery is both about finding the real killer and (by doing so) getting herself out of the spotlight.
This new Hulu murder mystery series was originally titled “Career Opportunities in Murder & Mayhem”. You don’t have to watch much of it before realizing both titles work for it.
Though I’m still happy they decided on Death and Other Details.
It just suits the quirky and sometimes slightly campy vibe more. To be fair, this vibe comes mostly from the story playing out on a cruise ship made to look like we’re in the 1950s.
The story itself can be quite brutal – and also has a few steamy scenes within the first two episodes already. Actually, within the first few minutes!
Along with Violett Beane and Mandy Patinkin in the key mystery-solving roles, the series has a brilliant cast. This includes Lauren Patten, Rahul Kohli, Angela Zhou, Hugo Diego Garcia, Pardis Saremi, Sophia Reid-Gantzert and Linda Emond.

The new murder mystery is a ten-episode series created (as in written and executive produced) by Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams (Stumptown). Both also serve as showrunners on the series. Mike Webb (The Society) directs the pilot episode.
Despite being billed as a “10-episode series”, it’s surely safe to say that we can get a season 2 if the viewers like it. And if you enjoy Only Murders in the Building and Hercule Poirot stories, then you’ll like this one.
However, you should also know that it gets darker and is intended for more mature audiences. Which is definitely in its favor!
Death And Other Details will premiere with its two first episodes on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in many other countries including Canada and Europe. A new episode comes weekly until the double-episode finale on March 5, 2024.
Death and Other Details premieres on Hulu/Disney+ on January 16, 2024.
