This is our pick of the very best documentaries to watch on the streaming service right now.

Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga

If you’ve got several hours to spare and want to learn about one of the most fascinating stock market moments in living history then Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga is a documentary that you must watch. This three-part series does an excellent job of introducing you to how the stock market and explaining how the GameStop saga unfolded.

Along the way you’re introduced to different people who invested in the stocks, including one man who used to be a professional gambler, who thinks that it is fun to play roulette online, but just as fun investing in the stock market. Getting to know the characters behind this monumental moment brought a wonderfully human element to this incredible David and Goliath moment, where retail traders finally got to get one over on the big hedge fund managers.

Generally, the documentary explains how GameStop stocks rose from $13.66 a share to $354.83 a share in a startingly short space of time.

The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker

Our next choice is on a topic, or rather a person, that some people may vaguely remember from all the way back in 2013. A hitchhiker called Kai was filmed when he saved a woman who was being attacked on the street. Kai Lawrence became a viral sensation when he jumped to the rescue of a lady who could have been killed by a truck driver. Following this, he gave an interview with a local news station in which he described his actions in a lively and charismatic way that the internet went wild for.

However, much as Kai was beloved by the internet, in that famous interview he confessed to beating the attacker in the head with a hatchet, something that probably should have been investigated by police. How does one go about finding a homeless hitchhiker though? This documentary tells the story of how Kai went from a wanted man to someone who was offered his own reality show, to a man on the run and wanted for murder. If you like a twisting tale with a dose of humor and more than a dash of true crime then this is the one to pick.

Gunther’s Millions

In terms of crazy stories, we’d wager there’s not a documentary with a more unusual subject matter than Gunther’s Millions. This Netflix documentary tells the story of a German Shepherd named Gunther. His mother died and left her entire fortune, totaling millions, to ensure the continued welfare of her beloved dog. She appointed a caretaker for Gunther, Maurizio Milan and it was up to Maurizio to ensure that Gunther would always be taken care of.

Beyond this, it quickly became clear that she had wanted not just for Gunther to be taken care of, but for a long line of blue-blooded Gunthers to also be taken care of, seemingly indefinitely. Maurizio rose to the challenge and now Gunther VI is providing quite the business empire for the dog. Of course, where large sums of money are involved, so too is corruption and it quickly becomes clear that Gunther’s millions could be being used for activities that the dog might not want anything at all to do with.

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal

The final documentary to round off this collection is Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. We predict that this is going to become one of Netflix’s most-watched documentaries as the story just twists more and more. This lengthy documentary follows the story of the Murdaugh family, a rich and influential family that reside in South Carolina. They shot to infamy when a tragic boat accident resulted in the death of one of the youngest sons, Paul Murdaugh’s friend, Mallory Beach. As the investigation begins to unfold, it appears that Paul may not have been as innocent as he seemed and that his influential family could be trying to cover up for him.

Whilst this might seem bad enough, things take an even stranger turn when two members of the Murdaugh family are found dead on their property, with seemingly no explanation. This one is going to send true crime fans’ heads spinning. There are so many twists in the tale that at times we found it hard to keep up.
