WOMAN OF THE DEAD: SEASON 2 on Netflix is the continuation of the 2022 series that made viewers very happy. I had been hoping for a second season, but we never heard much about this possibility so I had all but forgotten about it.

Fortunately, this series from Austria (org. title: Totenfrau) is based on a book trilogy, which could indicate that we’ll get a season 3 as well. These six new episodes are almost as good as the first six, so I’m certainly keeping my fingers crossed for a third season of Woman of the Dead.

The hunter becomes the hunted

In season 1 of Woman of the Dead, we met the mortician Blum (Anna Maria Mühe) as she avenged her husband’s murder. In Woman of the Dead season 2, the past catches up to her in the worst way imaginable.

Brunhilde Blum – who goes only by Blum – is not someone who gives up. Especially when the safety of people she cares about is on the line.

She used her job as an undertaker to get rid of the people she killed in the first season. Now, pieces of another person’s body are discovered in the coffin of a deceased person, and the obvious place to look is at the undertaker.

Especially for the Federal Investigative Inspector Birgit Wallner (Britta Hammelstein), who was convinced that Blum was killing people in season 1, but could not prove it. As soon as these body parts are found, she’s right back to try and finally arrest Blum.

All the usual suspects return

In season 2, it quickly turns out Wallner isn’t the only one after Blum. Before she can get to her, Blum’s own daughter is kidnapped in an effort to get something from her. It’s the most basic form of blackmailing. Unfortunately, Blum doesn’t have what the kidnapper wants.

As a result, she sets out to find her daughter and get her back.

And yes, more people will die – at the hands of several different people. In season 2, you have no idea who you can trust. In fact, a few people will need new alliances and may even have to reconsider who the real enemy is. Blum also meets an ally in Mariah (Hayal Kaya)

Woman of the Dead Season 2 has all the key characters from Season 1 (those who survived) return for this second season. Blum and Wallner continue to go head-to-head, but Blum’s colleague Reza Shadid (Yousef “Joe” Sweid) is also still in her life and the kids love him.

The matriarch of the wealthy and powerful Schönborn family, Johanna Schönborn (Michou Friesz), is also still fighting. Not least against the criminals – led by Badal Sarkissian (Peter Kurth) – she accepted into the family business to help it survive.

Plus, you’ll meet Tamar (Sabine Timoteo), who works for Sakissian, and she is fascinating in the scariest ways. It’s a mess and in season 2, the stakes are higher than ever – for everyone involved!

Watch season 2 of Woman of the Dead on Netflix

The director of the season 2 episodes is Daniel Geronimo Prochaska (The Strange House) so it’s a new director from season 1, but it’s a seamless transition. Writers on the episodes are Benito Mueller & Wolfgang Mueller, Mike Majzen, Barbara Stepansky, Timo Lombeck, and Marcel Kawentel.

Once again, Anna Maria Mühe is brilliant as Blum, but so is Britta Hammelstein as Wallner. It’s strange not rooting for the detective when she’s right about who the killer is, but that’s because I can relate to Blum. No small feat to achieve, but this is a strong story.

As mentioned earlier, the Austrian-German series is based on the bestseller trilogy by multiple award-winning author Bernhard Aichner. It’s shot in gorgeous locations including Vienna and Lower Austria. Especially, the breathtaking mountain landscape of Tyrol.

Season 1 of Woman of the Dead managed to be on the Top 10 list of non-English language series for three weeks. Hopefully, season 2 will accomplish the same so we can get a season 3 as well. Until then, enjoy these six new episodes of Totenfrau on Netflix.

Woman of the Dead: Season 2 is out on Netflix on March 19, 2025.

Plot

Two years after avenging her husband’s death, Blum has found a measure of peace — but secrets never stay buried for long.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
