WELCOME TO KITTYTOWN is a true passion project. Not only was it made with a very small budget, but it also covers several genres. As someone who usually enjoys hybrid mixes and always prefers talent and passion over a big-budget vanity project, I was ready to give it a shot. And boy am I glad I did. I had no idea this would speak so much to my most basic funny bone: Farts.
Or, well, toilet humor on a larger scale as well. It turns out that in Welcome to Kittytown, the pandemic that caused our downfall started in our digestive system and made us literally sh*t ourselves to death. For the record, this movie was produced way before this current summer era of explosive diarrhea. The release timing is awfully poignant, though, and I absolutely recommend it.

A barren, disease-ridden wasteland
In Welcome to Kittytown, we meet Sam (Darren Zimmer), who is a lonely survivor in a post-apocalyptic world. He is also the narrator, and he will tell you how the world finally succumbed. It’s a story that reminded me of I Am Legend in a sense. Well, in the sense that our downfall was something that was supposed to help cure an issue.
Instead, it absolutely broke the world.
As a result, Sam is trying to survive in a barren, disease-ridden wasteland of a world that is SOL [sh*t out of luck]. And yes, I did choose that particular phrase because people are pooping themselves to death. Sam hasn’t yet, but his stomach makes some eerie sounds, and he is, umm, quite gassy. That appears to be an issue for everyone still alive.
To some point, anyway.
Get by with a little help from… Ted?!
Very much against Sam’s wishes, he comes across Ted (Robert Bryn Mann). Or more precisely, Ted finds Sam’s temporary home and wants to stick together. Ted is extremely cheery and happy for someone living in a world of doom and gloom. He is the opposite of Sam. However, as we know from many post-apocalyptic movies, those people are usually trying to push down extreme sadness and grief to survive.
And getting your hands on some food is no small task. Anything fresh is deadly, so canned food is all you should attempt to eat at this point.
And yes, there is a gorgeous running joke in Welcome to Kittytown, which confronts the fact that the two survivors appear to be well-fed. If you can believe that humanity died of a sinister diarrhea, then surely anyone’s weight shouldn’t be an issue.
However, from Hugo (Jorge Garcia) in Lost to Samwell (John Bradley) in Game of Thrones, it appears the most unbelievable thing in any genre story is that people can be overweight.
For the record, Robert Bryn Mann’s “Ted” does get on my nerves a little bit. Sometimes a lot. What I’m saying is simply that I relate to Sam, and that I want to warn you that you may get irritated as well. That’s clearly the point, but it does get pretty intense.

Douglas Luciuk is the director of Welcome to Kittytown, which he also produced. In fact, he is also the composer, so clearly we’re dealing with a multi-talent, and I am ready for more from Douglas Luciuk. This microbudget apocalyptic comedy was made in Saskatchewan, Canada. And yes, you’ll hear a few of those tell-tale Canadian pronunciations, which I personally find very endearing. Also, microbudget means low-fi effects, which I enjoyed here!
The screenplay comes from the two stars, Robert Bryn Mann and Darren Zimmer. While I have only mentioned these two, there are more actors in the storyline, but not many, as the world is a wasteland. Who these other characters are, and whether they’re friend or foe (maybe both?!) is for you to discover on your own.
Welcome to Kittytown has screened at an impressive 29 international film festivals, which included the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) in 2025. I can only imagine what a blast it must have been to watch this during a festival screening. Watching a crazy horror-comedy with other like-minded people is a treat for all genre fans.
And yet, I have to say this one works remarkably well at home as well. I certainly had no problem laughing out loud and feeling disgusted (when intended) by this crazy genre treat. So you know, yes, the title will make sense when you watch the movie. And I recommend that you do check it out and support independent filmmakers. All while getting to enjoy the crazy world of Welcome to Kittytown, which is a gas… really!
Welcome to Kittytown is out on Digital in North America from September 22, 2026.
