TWISTERS (2024) is the new sequel to the 1996 disaster movie TWISTER. This is the perfect summer blockbuster and a must-watch in movie theaters. A very pleasant surprise. Read our full Twisters movie review here!

TWISTERS (2024) is coming to a movie theater near you, and you should absolutely go watch it. Admittedly, I am a sucker for disaster movies, but I am often disappointed by them because I also need a good story and well-written characters. This one delivers on all counts!

It’s also the new sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister though you don’t need to remember the first movie. To me, this is the perfect summer blockbuster and just what movie theaters need to pull in the crowds. The runtime is right around two hours, but it never feels too long.

For the record, I also loved the soundtrack. I’m not the biggest fan of country music, though I do enjoy some of it. In Twisters, the music just fits perfectly and I found a few new songs for my 2024 summer playlist.

Are you ready for tornado season?!

In Twisters, we follow Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), and in the opening scene – which is wild – we see why she five years later is “a former storm chaser”. She is haunted by the brutal and fatal events of that opening sequence, which is also the audience’s first encounter with a tornado.

That intense beginning to Twisters took place during her college years in Oklahoma. Five years later, she studies storm patterns on screens safely from an office in New York City. However, when we meet her again, she is convinced to return to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos).

The only reason she is convinced to return and help him for one week is because he wants to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. A system that could help save lives. That’s all Kate Cooper ever wanted to do, so she’s on board. She’s a bit reluctant, but not very.

Twisters (2024) – Review | Disaster Movie Sequel

Life-changing path

Once back on the storm chaser trail, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). He’s a YouTuber with a charming yet seemingly very reckless approach to storm chasing. Of course, there is much more to both him and his raucous crew, which makes for a much better story.

We hear the storm season described on the news as a “once in a generation”-type, so we know it’s about to get bad. What I liked was the focus on the people who lost their homes (and sometimes loved ones) due to a tornado. It’s a life-changing experience when you’re in a tornado’s path.

Also, there is a friendly banter and competition between Kate and Tyler’s teams – science versus social media, on the surface – as they try to find the best twisters. Then multiple storm systems start converging over central Oklahoma, and it becomes much worse than ever expected.

And yet, this is what they need to get the data required to better understand tornados.

Go watch Twisters in movie theaters!

Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung. He’s the Oscar® nominated writer-director of Minari which starred Steven Yeun. The screenplay comes from Mark L. Smith, who was the writer of the Best Picture nominee The Revenant (2015).

Mark L. Smith also wrote The Midnight Sky (2020) and the horror movies Vacancy (2007), the US remake of Martyrs (2015), and Overlord (2018). The story is from Joseph Kosinski and the movie is based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.

Alongside the main cast, Twisters also stars Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (Utopia), Daryl McCormack (The Woman in the Wall), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (The Good Neighbor) and Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy).

Twisters is truly an epic new disaster movie, that should be watched in a movie theater for maximum impact. The sound and imagery deserve to be experienced on that huge screen in a dark movie theater. A perfect current-day addition to the 1996 blockbuster Twister.

Twisters is only out in theaters (where it should be experienced) from July 19, 2024.

Plot

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
