THE STOLEN GIRL is a new Hulu & Disney+ series from the UK. Based on “Playdate” by acclaimed Nordic Noir author Alex Dahl, this story features a very simple core plot about a girl getting abducted.
However, as shown in the trailer (which was less spoiler-filled than I feared), it has many twists and turns. All five episodes were watched (okay, binged) in one sitting. Yes, this series is that intriguing and fascinating. With runtimes around 45 minutes, it has a tight pace.

All the secrets will come spilling out
From very early on in The Stolen Girl, we will see people and moments we won’t know how to place. However, everything and everyone is somehow part of the core story about a girl being abducted. You will undoubtedly question who to trust. As you should. Basically, trust no one.
The story is essentially told through the actions of three women: The mother of the girl taken, the woman who takes the girl, and finally, an eager investigative journalist who cannot stop digging. She’s like a dog with a bone and cannot give up once she’s begun.
We’re in British suburbia, and while life seems simple and calm, this is about to end in a drastic and brutal manner.
WATCH THIS IF YOU ENJOY…
The drama begins when Elisa (Denise Gough) and Fred Blix’s (Jim Sturgess) daughter, Lucia (Beatrice Cohen), is suddenly gone. She’s been at a sleepover for the first time in her life. All seemed normal, and it was with a new school friend, Josephine (or Josie).
However, suddenly, the phone number for Josie’s mom, Rebecca Walsh (Holliday Grainger), has stopped working. And when they go to her house to pick up their daughter, no one appears to be living there.
It’s every parent’s nightmare come true.
Before the end of The Stolen Girl, all the secrets of everyone involved with both Lucia and those who have taken her will come spilling out. It won’t be pretty, but it’s necessary to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Who can find the answers first?
As we’re following Elisa desperately trying to find clues as to where her daughter is, we also see what the sweet and kind Rebecca Walsh (Holliday Grainger) is up to. Why would she take her daughter? And how can Elisa get her back? Or even just find out where she is?!
Before Elisa can get to the bottom of everything, the extremely persistent and intuitive journalist Selma Desai (One Day‘s Ambika Mod) appears to be one step behind or in front of her. She discovers secrets that were never supposed to come out.
Despite being extremely annoying to Elisa, it appears Selma might just be the only person persistent enough to find answers.
Very much on the sideline but usually doing extremely good investigative work are DI Shona Sinclair (Bronagh Waugh) and DS Lizzie Walker (Layo-Christina Akinlude). They are the lead investigators looking into Lucia’s disappearance.
Fred Blix is a criminal lawyer and doesn’t seem like a very hands-on father. Plus, he has secrets of his own and seems more worried with those at times. Of course, they could have something to do with the disappearance of Lucia.
Also, there’s Kaleb Negasi (Michael Workéyè) as Selma’s editor, who is trying to get her to back off. Mostly for the sake of their publication but also for her own sake, as she is on the verge of getting fired.
Watch The Stolen Girl series on Hulu & Disney+
The Stolen Girl was adapted by Catherine Moulton (Hijack), who wrote all episodes in this limited series. All five episodes are directed by Eva Husson (Hanna, Girls of the Sun). I love that the series focuses on the women in the story, as they really do carry every key element.
It’s based on the best-selling novel titled “Playdate” by Alex Dahl. Hopefully, this is the first of many Alex Dahl stories to be turned into a series. She’s also an executive producer on this Hulu & Disney+ series adaptation.
Not unlike Harlan Coben – and yes, Alex Dahl can easily handle the comparison. Also, Nicola Shindler is another one of the executive producers, and she previously worked on several Harlan Coben series adaptations. Including Fool Me Once and Missing You.
Freeform will roll out episodes of The Stolen Girl in the U.S. weekly at 10:00 PM ET beginning April 16, 2025, and episodes will be available to stream the next day on Hulu. In the UK and other countries internationally, it streams on Disney+ from April 16, 2025.
The Stolen Girl limited series premieres internationally on April 16, 2025.
