THE STICKY on Prime Video is a gloriously fun little crime-comedy series inspired by the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. The casting is perfect and the six short episodes make it extremely binge-worthy. Read our full The Sticky series review here!

THE STICKY is a new Prime Video series that mixes comedy and crime. With just six half-hour episodes, it’s a sticky little treat and it was impossible for me not to binge-watch it. This is a Blumhouse production, so you know it’ll get dark and wacky in all the right ways.

The star of the show is Margo Martindale, and she’s joined by a wonderful cast. One that includes series producer Jamie Lee Curtis. Be sure to check out this limited series inspired by the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. We watched all episodes for this review – we simply had to.

(Not) The true story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist

As revealed very clearly by the introduction to each episode, The Sticky may be inspired by the very true story about the so-called “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist”. However, this Prime Video limited series is not the true story.

Instead, this is a fun little fantasy about how it could all have happened. And, admittedly, it’s a wonderful little thought experiment.

We meet a maple syrup farmer, Ruth Landry (three-time Emmy winner Margo Martindale) as she’s going through a serious crisis. She’s a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer, who is being pressured by the Maple Syrup Association to sell her farm.

Her husband, who is the official owner of the farm, is in a coma, and the greedy head of the association wants to exploit this fact. However, he should know better than to try and push Ruth Landry, when she’s already under pressure.

Instead of giving in, she fights back. She gets creative before finally turning to crime. She teams up with a hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and the kind mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr). A wonderfully weird trio, if ever I saw one!

All three have had it with being second-rate in their respective lives, and form a plan that will result in a multi-million dollar heist. Not for money or gold, but for syrup on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.

The Sticky: Season 1 – Review | Comedy-Crime | Prime Video

A wonderfully sticky treat

The title of The Sticky feels extra appropriate once you start watching as you will immediately find yourself stuck to the story. Be warned that it will suck you in like a regular flytrap. And also, you will probably be left wanting more.

Six episodes just feel too short for something so good!

always enjoy watching Margo Martindale in whatever she does. Among the titles we’ve reviewed are the crazy horror-comedy Cocaine Bear and the Netflix true-crime series The Watcher. Both are very much worth watching – as is The Sticky on Prime Video.

Oscar and Emmy winner (and Final Girl horror icon) Jamie Lee Curtis is also in The Sticky in a guest star capacity. Also, she’s executive producing so this is very much her project as well.

In other key roles, we also see Gita Miller and Suzanne Clément along with Guy Nadon, Mickaël Gouin, and Michel Perron.

Season 2 of The Sticky on Prime Video?

There’s no information on a season 2 of The Sticky, which seems to be made as a limited series. However, the ending of episode 6 definitely leaves room for more seasons.

In other words, we hope to get The Sticky Season 2, but we (as of writing this review) have no news of more seasons coming. Fingers crossed that this will change once people watch it and Prime Video has a hit on their hands.

The creators, executive producers, showrunners, and writers of The Sticky are Brian Donovan and Ed Herro. The two previously worked as writers on the dark comedy series American Housewife (2016-2021) which was created by Sarah Dunn.

As already mentioned, The Sticky is produced by Blumhouse Television, Jamie Lee Curtis’ Comet Pictures, Jonathan Levine’s Megamix, and Sphere Media.

The series is directed by Michael Dowse (Preacher, Future Man) and Joyce Wong (Sort of) and each of the six episodes is a true treat. Honestly, if you’re in the mood for something weird and wonderfully entertaining, then you cannot miss with The Sticky. Enjoy!

The Sticky is out on Prime Video on December 6, 2024.

Plot

The Sticky is a series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country’s multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
