Miren investigates new horrors

The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game is the second season of the Spanish Netflix thriller series. It’s an adaptation of the second book in the saga about cases investigated by Miren. As witnessed in season 1, she has a tendency to get very involved and usually ends up in danger.

Season 2 also continues this pattern, so she will be in danger in several ways. It all begins when she gets an envelope with the question “Do you want to play?” written on it. Inside the envelope is a Polaroid showing a gagged young woman. Including a name which quickly leads her to a Missing Person case.

As a journalist – and as a sexual assault survivor who fights against women being abused – Miren Rojo (Milena Smit) goes all in on the game in an attempt to find this girl. Once again, both her life and sanity are on the line. This time, the investigation takes Miren to an elite school.

All signs point to this school somehow being connected with the disappearance and murder of two young girls. Working with her – though against her will – is her new colleague Jaime (Miki Esparbé). The case proves bigger than anyone expected and ultimately spans decades.

Milena Smit is back as Miren

The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game is an adaptation of the second book in the series featuring journalist and survivor Miren. Milena Smit (The Platform 2, Parallel Mothers) returns as Miren Rojo in these six new episodes.

We also have Aixa Villagrán (The Red Virgin), Marco Cáceres (Toy Boy), and Jose Coronado (Your Son) returning from season 1. Other than these actors, there are mostly new characters and therefore also new actors in the season 2 cast.

As a new colleague at the newspaper, Jaime, we have Miki Esparbé (The Innocent, Smiley) joining Miren. Despite Miren’s wish to work alone, the two are asked to work together on a new big case. As investigative journalists, they have very different approaches.

Having more than one proverbial tool in their toolbox will prove wise. She’s a hammer and he has more of a scalpel approach using charm and connections.

The cast of this second season is completed by Hugo Welzel (La Chica Invisible), Luis Callejo (The Longest Night, Below Zero), Luis Bermejo (Ánimas), and Vicente Romero (La novia gitana).

Watch Season 2 of The Snow Girl on Netflix

The screen adaptation of The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game comes from the screenwriters Jesús Mesas Silva and Javier Andrés Roig (Deudas, Estoy vivo). They also adapted Javier Castillo’s first novel in the Snow Girl saga for Netflix, which is always a good sign.

Directors on the six episodes of Season 2 are also the same as the Season 1 directors, which means Laura Alvea (Ánimas) & David Ulloa (Perdida) are back to direct. Overall, this second season of The Snow Girl didn’t quite reach the levels of the first season for me.

However, that final episode of season 2 did work extremely well. It was efficient and very powerful storytelling. Also, it teases that a third season could help wrap up a story that plays a key role in both seasons.

And yes, there is a third book (published in 2024) in The Snow Girl saga, so Netflix should be good to go.

The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game is on Netflix from January 31, 2025.

Plot

Miren investigates an elite school that seems to be at the center of the disappearance and murder of two young girls.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
