The Saviors – Movie Review (4/5)

THE SAVIORS is a comedy thriller with a small cast, a really strong story, and some amazing twists along the way. This is relatable and fairly slowburn at first, but it evolves and surprises in great ways. Read our full The Saviors movie review here!

THE SAVIORS is a genre hybrid currently playing at film festivals, but hopefully, you’ll all get to watch it soon. It’s a comedy, drama, and thriller hybrid starring Adam Scott, Danielle Deadwyler, Nazanin Boniadi, and Theo Rossi.

These four actors make up the core cast, but you will also be treated to an amazing supporting cast. With a runtime of just 90 minutes, this is a genre movie that gets almost everything right. Pay attention, and you’ll guess several twists, but (trust me!) it doesn’t make the viewing experience any less great.

A Cautionary Tale with a Twist

In The Saviors, we meet a suburban couple, Sean & Kim (Adam Scott & Danielle Deadwyler), who are not in the best place as a married couple right now. He is out of a job, and she is long tired of how he seems to be stuck in a slump.

Soon, they will have much bigger and more pressing problems than the lack of a job. Their otherwise ordinary (mediocre even) life takes a wild turn when they rent out their guesthouse. Okay, it’s a garage that has been converted into a guest house, but it looks really good. I mean, I would stay there for a holiday.

Anyway, the two people moving in (Nazanin Boniadi and Theo Rossi) come across as very mysterious. Also, they have a trunk that is extremely heavy and contains something they want to keep secret. Finally, they are receiving strange packages with (among other things) blueprints.

All of this is happening just as the president is coming to visit their town. Specifically, the place these strange new tenants have blueprints of. As a result, Sean and Kim are taking it upon themselves to find out more about these new people… a web of paranoia and danger is spinning faster than anyone could predict.

Stellar casting in this indie movie

When an independent movie attracts a strong cast, you can usually (often!) expect something really amazing. With The Saviors, the casting should tell you that the actors wanted to get on board due to the quality of the project. From the screenplay to the director.

Adam Scott (Hokum), Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard), Nazanin Boniadi (Counterpart), and Theo Rossi (The Penguin) portray the four main characters. Alongside these four wonderful actors, we also get talent in key supporting roles.

That’s why you can also look forward to seeing Ron Perlman, Kate Berlant (Don’t Worry Darling), Colleen Camp (The Deliverance), Daveed Diggs (“Oh Father” in The Boys), and Greg Kinnear (Smoke). I mean, come on, you know these actors often have options, and they chose to work on The Saviors.

When you watch it, I’m confident you’ll recognize why; This is a really good movie!

Watch The Saviors as soon as you can!

Kevin Hamedani is the director of The Saviors, for which he also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Travis Betz (Lo). Back in 2009, Kevin Hamedani directed and co-wrote the movie ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction, which was a zombie horror-comedy.

The Saviors hits on much darker notes, and despite being described as a comedy-thriller hybrid with drama elements, I would argue that it ends as an actual horror story!

Also, it’s worth noting that both Adam Scott and Danielle Deadwyler are on board as producers as well as actors. Again, this is usually a very good sign (though there are exceptions!), and in the case of The Saviors, it is definitely a good sign. Check out this genre gem as soon as you get the chance!
