THE SANDMAN SEASON 2 Volume 1 is finally out on Netflix now. And, trust me, as soon as you’ve watched the six new episodes, you will be longing for Volume 2. But maybe it’s a good thing that we’re getting a break because these episodes are heartbreaking.

As always, Morpheus (or Dream) is on a quest of some kind. In the Season 2 episodes of Volume 1, we’re getting through some very deep and dark character-driven stories. Each episode is around one hour long (more or less), and you have to pay attention.

Watch it quickly and avoid spoilers

The list of spoilers for The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 is quite comprehensive. Not that there are a million things we [the press] are asked not to reveal, but rather, there are some big moments in these six episodes.

It all begins with a family reunion. Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge) is called to a family meeting where Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston), Destiny (Adrian Lester), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) also take part.

Someone is missing, however, and Delirium wants to find their missing brother: Destruction (Barry Sloane). Of course, their brother isn’t missing in any conventional sense as he has opted out of leading his realm. In other words, he does not wish to be found.

To Hell and back…

Over the course of the six episodes in Volume 1 of The Sandman Season 2, we will join Dream on his quest. However, before we even get that far, many other quests need to be completed.

These quests and challenges will take Dream to Hell and back. Much of what happens to him is the result of his own past misdeeds. And there are many. In fact, if you’ve watched Andy and Quynh in The Old Guard 2, let’s just say that Dream has a wilder “love” story.

As he confronts everyone from Gods and monsters to mortals, and everything from friends to foes, he will have to face up to his own past actions and choices. It will result in many heartbreaking moments and tough choices.

Happy endings are not always possible. Not even for the Master of Dreams.

Watch The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 on Netflix

With Season 2, we will be getting Dream’s entire story arc, all the way to its conclusion, but in volume 1, we’re only getting the first part. And it is very dark, sad, heartbreaking, and absolutely filled to the brim with despair.

This second season is also the final season of The Sandman on Netflix. Volume 2 will be on Netflix on July 24 with an additional five episodes. Finally, a bonus episode featuring Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) will be released on July 31 to (fittingly, I suppose) end it all on Netflix.

Before we get that far, enjoy these six new episodes. The production quality is stellar, as always, and the storyline requires a lot from you, so do pay attention. Allan Heinberg is the showrunner on this second and final season.

The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 is on Netflix from July 3, 2025.

Plot

A reunion of the Endless thrusts Lord Morpheus onto a perilous path, where a fateful choice makes him the target of a relentless quest for vengeance.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
