THE PERFECT LIE is a Netflix series from the Netherlands (org. title: De Eetclub). It has 7 episodes and is told mainly through a lot of flashbacks. We’re at a police station where a woman is being interrogated and agrees to tell them everything. And when she says everything, she does mean it. This leads to many stories of relationship-fueled drama.
Most of it is fairly realistic. Not least, having to deal with other parents when your kids go to the same school. Of course, there are also elements involving a lot of partying and money spent. Adults playing around as if they’re teenagers again, which does result in even more drama. As we know from the beginning, this will have a fatal outcome, as a main character dies at the beginning.

A drama with crime and a deadly outcome
The Perfect Lie series is often labeled simply a drama, but the plot revolves around a fatal fire, which was not accidental. As such, this is more of a crime thriller mystery… with plenty of drama.
In fact, as much as the drama elements could and did intrigue me at times, it also takes up too much runtime for my liking. But hey, that’s me. I can’t relate to all that drama, since I tend to run in the opposite direction if I feel that kind of stuff start up. With seven episodes, there is plenty of time to uncover what happened.
Both on the night of the fire, before, and in the aftermath.
In this seemingly tight-knit group of friends, we will learn that their lives aren’t quite as perfect as they appear at first glance. While their friendship revolves around luxurious dinners, fine wines, and plenty of drugs, it will soon be undermined by distrust, deception, and betrayal. We follow Karen as she moves to the small town with her family and becomes the group’s latest member.
What starts as a fun and fascinating new life full of new friends – who refer to themselves as The Dinner Club (the name of the novel this series is based on) – will end fatally.
Episodes named after The Dinner Club members
Actually, that’s not entirely accurate, as The Dinner Club friends consist of eight people, and the series has just seven episodes. So, the episodes are named after each of the seven surviving members. The person who dies in a huge house fire plays a big role in the storyline, but because this person dies at the beginning of the series, we can’t hear their side of the story.
Well, we sort of can, through flashbacks, but not in the same way.
The series stars Dutch actors, who you may know if you’ve watched other Dutch productions. Leading the cast are Loes Haverkort (iHostage), Remko Vrijdag, Noortje Herlaar (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Edwin Jonker, Rifka Lodeizen, Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Charlie-Chan Dagelet and Teun Luijkx.
If you liked the Mexican Netflix series The Accident, then you can expect to enjoy this Dutch series as well. Both are high-quality productions, well-written, and have a strong cast. Also, there is that drama that feels a little too soap opera-fueled at times. For me, anyway, but I recognize this is exactly what many other viewers enjoy.
Watch The Perfect Lie series on Netflix now
As mentioned earlier, The Perfect Lie is based on the novel “The Dinner Club” by Saskia Noort. I have not read the novel, so it’s impossible for me to say if this is a close adaptation or not. However, I can definitely see why it was turned into a series, which is a good sign.
The Perfect Lie series (org. title: De Eetclub) was created by Dorien Goertzen (All Inclusive). Along with being the creator of this series, Dorien Goertzen is also one of the episode writers alongside Jop Esmeijer. The directors of the seven episodes are Dana Nechushtan (Elixer) and Margien Rogaar.
For me, this Netflix series has a lot going for it in terms of interesting characters and drama that I’m sure plenty of viewers can relate to. At the same time, it has a lot more glitz and glamour than your average married-with-children group of friends. The drama takes up too much runtime for my liking, but I also recognize that this is exactly what it’s built on. Give it a shot and see if The Perfect Lie is to your liking.
Maybe we’ll even get a season 2 of The Perfect Lie?! I would certainly say the final episode of season 1 leaves plenty of room for a continuation.
The Perfect Lie is out globally on Netflix on September 10, 2026.
