THE OTHER is a new supernatural horror movie previously known as Psychopomp. It starts a little slow but gets better throughout and ends brutally. Definitely worth checking out. Also, produced by the Final Destination creator. Read our full The Other movie review here!

THE OTHER is a horror movie featuring a child that does not speak. Also, she may be either dangerous or haunted by something that’s a danger to everyone around her. Or rather, only the women, it would appear.

It’s a supernatural horror movie, but the special effects are overwhelmingly practical, and I loved that. It worked remarkably well. The runtime is just shy of 1 hour and 40 minutes, and while it starts a little slow, it only gets better from there.

A real boss move as it’s often the other way around.

Foster child horror with a twist

It’s not hard to make a horror movie featuring a foster child. You just have to decide whether the villain of the story is the foster child or their new foster parents. With The Other, we go a step further, and a third option (which I won’t spoil for you here) is implemented.

Before that detail of the story is revealed, we meet the married couple Robin (Olivia Macklin) and Daniel (Dylan McTee). After years of trying to conceive and losing their child every time, they’ve opted to help a foster child and adopt Kathelia (Avangeline Friedlander).

However, Kathelia isn’t your average child. She’s a sweet little black girl thrown into this white suburban family. Something, I am happy to note, is commented on, as they realize they should get her something other than just white faced dolls.

Quick side note: What isn’t commented on is who does Kathelia’s hair. It’s always gorgeously styled and in ways that I would not expect anyone inexperienced could pull off. Just sayin’. A quick line on this would’ve helped, and otherwise, the hair should be simpler.

The Other (2025) – Review | Supernatural Horror | Psychopomp

A mute orphan and her new friend

What sets Kathelia apart from most isn’t that she’s a black girl in a white family but rather that she is a mute. Also, she’s an orphan with a very dark past, which is readily available for anyone to read online, so her foster parents (and grandma) already know all about this.

I was confused as to why no one has decided to teach Kathelia sign language or some other form of communication. Supposedly, she has never spoken, but she can read and write, so either sign language or written communication seems like an obvious workaround.

In any case, Kathelia doesn’t need words to communicate with the girl, Fiona (Lily D. Moore), who lives nearby. Fiona seems to communicate with Kathelia just fine without spoken words. Not unusual for kids, really, but Fiona has some extra skills.

Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled with The Other after the first act, but the second act really got me involved and caring about all the characters. And that final third act is wild and bloody in true horror fashion. It gets very dark!

Watch The Other on Digital now!

The Other (which was originally titled Psychopomp) comes from writer and director Paul Ehteredge. He previously wrote and directed Hellbent (2004). Also, the name Jeffrey Reddick should ring a bell for most horror fans, and he’s producing this horror movie.

Jeffrey Reddick is the creator of the Final Destination franchise, which is in the midst of a glorious revival thanks to Final Destination: Bloodlines.

Want an extra little horror royalty added to this new supernatural horror movie? How about having the always wonderful Shawnee Smith as Fiona’s mom?! Shawnee Smith is, of course, the most recurring character of the SAW franchise alongside Jigsaw himself.

Plus, she had done cult horror productions even before Saw. Including the 1988 sci-fi horror movie The Blob and the Stephen King TV series adaptations The Stand (1994) and The Shining (1997).

If you’re a little patient with The Other, then it will reward you with a heart-filled story that ultimately delivers on brutal horror, full of practical effects. A release date on the first Friday the 13th of 2025 is perfect.

Do not miss out on this one. It gets better and better throughout!

The Other (2025) is out on Digital & On Demand from June 13, 2025.

Plot

After years of infertility, Robin and Daniel adopt Kathelia, a mute orphan with a dark past. But their dream turns to horror as eerie events unfold and Kathelia’s behavior grows unsettling. As an evil force takes hold, they must fight for their family—and their survival.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
