THE INVESTIGATION OF LUCY LETBY is a new Netflix documentary feature film. It covers several true crime cases, which may not be actual cases at all, but that’s just one of the problems Lucy Letby is facing. As such, this Netflix true crime documentary is partly focused on a serial killer case while also being a possible case of wrongful conviction.

Actually, it goes even further than that, as the cases involving the deaths of newborn babies may not even be crimes. Several experts have argued that the deaths appear to be accidental, but that happened after a conviction. And we all know how impossible it is to overturn any conviction, as those who managed to get someone convicted (police and prosecutors) never want to admit fault or errors.

Murder, accident, or hospital neglect?

In The Investigation of Lucy Letby, the true crime cases covered are ones accusing Lucy Letby of having murdered several babies. As a neonatal nurse, she was working shifts in a hospital when many newborn babies died. In itself, these are heartbreaking tragedies. However, the tragedies turn into criminal offences when it’s eventually decided that these deaths were not natural or accidental.

Instead, it’s decided (on rather flimsy “evidence”) that the babies were murdered. And since Lucy Letby was working when the deaths occurred, she must have killed them. Yes, I am oversimplifying, but to be fair, so did the police investigators and prosecutors.

There is absolutely no evidence linking Lucy Letby directly to these deaths. Yes, she was working shifts and caring for the tiny patients, but she was the resident expert, so naturally, she was given the patients who needed her specific skill sets. The hospital was constantly understaffed, so she likely even handled more cases than she ought to have.

How much circumstantial evidence is enough?

Now, to be direct, I am not saying that she didn’t do anything wrong. What I am saying is that there is no real evidence that she did, which means no court should be able to convict her. Sure, she brought home confidential papers she shouldn’t have. Of course, other people have done that with no repercussions except re-election.

And yes, she wrote strange things in her journal as part of dealing with her stressful job. Again, nothing that shows she is guilty of murder, though obviously, this should have been fought in court.

However, anyone who has watched wrongful convictions or strange trials will recognize that anything can look bad when taken out of context. And we also know that anything that would shine a positive light on the accused is ignored. Finally, without a good (or just decent) defence lawyer, there is virtually no chance of not getting convicted.

With this particular trial, the evidence is just so circumstantial that it seems like it should not be enough?!

An expert, whose old research papers were used (incorrectly!) by another so-called expert during the trial, has even gone over each of the deaths and found them all natural or accidental. What he didn’t find was proof of murder… but this happened after a conviction, so now Lucy Letby is trying for an appeal.

Watch The Investigation of Lucy Letby on Netflix now

Obviously, watching a Netflix true crime documentary like this is tough. It’s about the untimely and shocking deaths of many newborn babies, which is a hard watch. And it is so very easy to get angry at Lucy Letby for not reacting as you may feel she should have. Whether you want that reaction to be her getting emotional or defending herself.

Of course, we know that accused people are often asked by their lawyers to show no emotion at all.

Again, she may be guilty if these deaths were murders in the first place. Still, the evidence must be there. I mean, the parents of the dead babies didn’t even know that these deaths were seen as anything but tragic fates. Imagine getting a phone call that someone has been arrested for the murder of your baby. Now add the fact that you had no idea your baby’s death was a murder?!

So much is done wrong, and many people are suffering as a result. That is a tragedy, no matter what the facts of the case are. However, it seems a good, hard look at this hospital and the “experts” who actively try to get involved with cases – after reading about them in the newspaper – is long overdue.

Apart from seeing interviews and interrogation of Lucy Letby, we hear from police detectives and medical experts. Also, a member of the press who followed the trial. Finally, being interviewed in digitally altered states (which is definitely a good thing), we get interviews with the mother of one of the dead babies and Lucy Letby’s best friend. Both deliver honest and direct opinions focusing on facts.

The Investigation of Lucy Letby premieres on Netflix on February 4, 2026.

Plot

Unseen footage and unheard insider accounts reveal the harrowing and divisive case of Lucy Letby, the neonatal nurse convicted of fatally harming infants.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
