THE GIRL INSIDE THE PHOTOGRAPH is a Horror Sci-Fi movie made with a small budget but a lot of heart and talent. At 1 hour and 48 minutes, it is too long, but don’t let that stop you from watching it. The core story is fascinating and gets very dark. However, the ending is a real mindf**k. Read our full The Girl Inside the Photograph movie review here!

THE GIRL INSIDE THE PHOTOGRAPH is a true indie gem that shows a lot of promise. I recognize that may sound like saying “good job” to someone who didn’t win a race, but I say it as a true and honest compliment. The runtime is what makes it a production that shows promise while not blowing my mind or getting on any “best of” lists.

Not that every single movie has to be mindblowing, but this horror sci-fi movie had a real shot at doing just that. The acting is good, the story is interesting and engaging, plus the horror elements hit hard. There are just too many slow moments, and as much as I enjoy slow-burning and character-driven movies, this one would’ve improved greatly with some tough cuts.

Heartbreaking, scary, and wild

Having just called The Girl Inside the Photograph a slow-burning and character-driven movie, I wanted to also highlight something else. This genre-mix is a truly heartbreaking, scary, and wild ride. Sadly, it is heartbreaking due to the circumstances our lead protagonist is living under.

It always breaks my heart to see someone growing up without love and support. A far too common occurrence.

In The Girl Inside the Photograph, we meet the teenage girl Freya Lundstrum (Jaria Brownlee), as she tries to find her missing cat. She’s hanging up flyers and getting calls from people claiming to help, but just having fun at her expense.

Quick personal comment: As much as many people will help you find a missing pet, there are always some a**holes out there calling the number on these flyers and scaring people.

Anyway, while this is happening, Freya will suddenly find herself investigating something else as well: The history of her own house. It turns out that 230 Briar Road is an infamous address. People who have lived here tend to have experienced events that cannot be explained. The same is now happening to Freya, so she has to rely on two former occupants for more insight.

And that’s all I’ll say about the plot of The Girl Inside the Photograph, because the rest really is for you to experience.

The ending of The Girl Inside the Photograph

No, this isn’t some “ending explained” segment of our The Girl Inside the Photograph movie review. However, I couldn’t not mention the ending of this low-budget horror sci-fi movie.

It is brutal… and surprising… and even sudden.

And I applaud that.

I, however, also know that it’s the kind of ending that may initially surprise fans. If you’re one of them, then I encourage you to take a breath and think again, as The Girl Inside the Photograph movie ending is actually kind of genius. Think back on the movie you just watched from the perspective of the ending, and it gains an additional dimension.

One that I certainly enjoyed, and I think many genre fans will as well.

Watch The Girl Inside the Photograph when you can!

The Girl Inside the Photograph comes from co-directors David Michán and Ed Alexander. The two directors also co-wrote the screenplay with Maria-Paula Garavito. The horror sci-fi hybrid was made with a micro-budget, but you will not think so when you watch it.

It world-premiered in the Midnight Programming block at Dances With Films in New York on January 17, 2026, so it’s just getting started. Hopefully, it will be chosen for many of the upcoming genre film festivals. I personally think audiences at genre film festivals will enjoy this immensely, not least as the vibe of it should work perfectly in a dark theater.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH…

What The Girl Inside the Photograph may lack in terms of cutting the proverbial fat, it more than makes up for in mood and vibe. There is this eerie and dark sensation that permeates throughout, and I loved that. From the choice in visual style to the characters and how they interact, this horror sci-fi movie has so much going for it.

In that sense, what does it matter that it could have been 15 minutes shorter? Well, it really doesn’t matter in terms of recommendation. It does, however, matter in terms of how we ultimately rate it. And it also makes us really excited to see what comes next from Ed Alender and David Michán. We’ll certainly be ready to cover their next genre production here at Heaven of Horror.

The Girl Inside the Photograph just started screening at film festivals, so watch it when you get the chance.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
