THE DEVIL’S MOUTH is a Prime Video horror thriller with a shark plot. It’s set in a cave, which isn’t exactly innovative, as we saw it in the 2019 shark movie 47 Meters Down: Uncaged as well. However, thanks to the character-driven plot and a solid cast, this shark horror thriller worked better than I dared hope.
Admittedly, it’s not getting added to our Best Shark Movies list. However, if we were to make a list featuring the shark horror movies worth watching, then yes, The Devil’s Mouth would absolutely make it onto that list. So would Thrash, while Chum would not, if such comparisons make sense to you.

No, the title isn’t about the shark
The title of The Devil’s Mouth could easily refer to the mouth of a shark. However, it’s the name of a cave that has fresh water rather than salt water. We get to this cave because a group of five friends head there for one last adventure on their trip to Thailand.
They are all about to begin their “real” lives as young adults and will be moving away from each other, so this is a very emotional trip. For one of them (Kathryn Newton), it’s also a chance to connect with her deceased father, who went to this same cave as a young man.
So, they sign up for a guided swim through this somewhat remote cave system known as The Devil’s Mouth. While there are sharks in Thailand, this area should be safe, so they’re more focused on the natural wonder of the place than what’s in the water.
As it turns out, it isn’t safe at all.
A Bull Shark, which can adapt to exist in both fresh and salt water, is in the cave. Being able to adjust to fresh water isn’t the only trademark of a bull shark. They are also notoriously aggressive and highly territorial. And now the five friends are trapped in a cave with one big bull shark.
A small cast of young adult talents
Despite a feeling (for me, anyway) that Kathryn Newton has been around for a long time, she is still in the “young adult” category. So is the entire cast that has been labeled a “rising young adult ensemble cast.” A description I can easily get behind.
Most horror fans will certainly be familiar with Kathryn Newton from Freaky (2020) and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026), but she also starred in the two 2024 movies, Abigail and Lisa Frankenstein. Basically, she’s been in a lot of genre productions already.
As her best friend in The Devil’s Mouth, we have Lana Condor (Pretty Lethal) with Nico Hiraga (The Power), Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Tommi Rose (Outer Banks) rounding out the group of five friends.

The Devil’s Mouth is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who previously directed Imaginary (2024) and has worked on horror movies since his 2005 feature debut, Cry Wolf. The screenplay comes from screenwriters Aja Gabel (Sunny) & Myung Joh Wesner (Death and Other Details).
I enjoyed how this story was very character-driven, and that we got a chance to know these characters before they started dying. Sorry, that’s hardly a spoiler for a shark horror movie. Only a few (if any) will survive any shark movie.
Seeing these five friends enjoy life, while also recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of their friendship, is a solid beginning. It ensures that we care about these characters. Also, I should mention that the surroundings are gorgeous. Less so once the shark starts shredding everything in sight, but still.
The runtime is 105 minutes, and the rating is PG-13, which may make this horror-thriller sound “safe”. However, it does get very brutal, and the shark plays a big part once we get to that part of the movie.
