As long as you’re happy with a lot more comedy than horror, then Freaks of Nature is a good horror-comedy for you

From the very first scenes, you’ll get humans, vampires, zombies and oh yeah, aliens. Basically, in Freaks of Nature there’s a little bit of everything from the horror genre, but the main feeling is comedy. And that’s just fine, as long as you know what you’re about to watch. However, from the poster to the trailer, the promotion of the movie is very honest.

Freaks of Nature poster It has a wonderful 80s look and feel with a basic coming-of-age story. You know, if your comng-of-age story has the backdrop of friends and family turning into vampires or zombies. And just when the world seems to be working out pretty well, the aliens show up.

The three primary roles are played by Nicholas Braun (Poltergeist – 2015), Mackenzie Davis (The Martian) and Josh Fadem (Better Call Saul), who all do a great job. Especially when it comes to the comedy part, but Mackenzie Davis does have some quite heartbreaking scenes as well. However, a huge part of why you should watch Freaks of Nature is the impressive ensamble cast of supporting characters, where you’ll get Denis Leary, Keegan-Michael Key, Mae Whitman, Ed Westwick, Vanessa Hudgens, Joan Cusack and many more.

Written by Oren Uziel, who has a strong sense of comedy and action, having been co-writer on 22 Jump Street and the announced Men In Black 4. On a darker note, however, he is also behind the script for God Particle. A J.J. Abrams movie currently in pre-production, which has already been rumored as possibly being the next Cloverfield project.

Robbie Pickering directed Freaks of Nature and this is only his second feature film, but he’s already shown a strong affinity for both horror and – especially – comedy, so he could easily end up making the next great horror-comedy. For me, this could easily be compared to Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, but in that comparison Freaks of Nature is not on the same level. It’s on its way there though, so I’m hoping Pickering’s next project will be much closer.

Freaks of Nature is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and On Demand

Plot

In the town of Dillford, humans, vampires and zombies were all living in peace – until the alien apocalypse arrived. Now three teenagers-one human, one vampire and one zombie-have to team up to figure out how to get rid of the visitors

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
