THE ART OF SARAH on Netflix is a murder mystery series from South Korea. And yes, this series has everything that we love from South Korean productions. Particularly, a very character-driven story. With eight 45-minute episodes, it keeps you guessing. Read our The Art of Sarah series review here and find it on Netflix now!

THE ART OF SARAH is a South Korean Netflix series with eight gorgeous episodes. I was ready to binge-watch the entire thing in one sitting. It’s a murder mystery, so we’re dealing with the crime and thriller genres as well. While I always expect a lot from any genre production from South Korea, I don’t always find myself as intrigued and fascinated as was the case with this Netflix series.

The character-driven storyline features many amazing characters. Not all of them are likable, but you should still be able to relate to them all in some way. Whether due to their background or their desires for the future. With eight episodes, this series has plenty of runtime to dive into several of the characters, while never getting lost. The murder mystery (and lots of fraud) is always at the center.

Who is Sarah Kim?

At the heart of The Art of Sarah on Netflix, we find the title character, Sarah Kim. She is supposedly in charge of the Asian region of a very exclusive luxury brand. It’s only for the top 0.1% and costs a small fortune. It begins with handbags, but the goal is something much bigger.

The brand is new to South Korea, but everyone already knows that European royalty has been using the brand for decades. How do they know this? Well, because someone has managed to get the message out. It’s all over the Internet, so it obviously must be true.

“So, where does the murder mystery come into play?” you ask.

Sarah Kim is the one who is found murdered by an influencer right at the beginning of the series. Everything else is flashbacks and the police investigating this death. Both will lead us through a whirlwind of success. Or the appearance of success, which – in the world of luxury and social media fame – is all you really need.

A very entertaining character gallery

Along with the title character of Sarah Kim, we follow the respected and methodical Detective Park Mu-gyeong (Lee Jun-hyuk). He is assigned to the case and will soon discover that this murder is much more than a typical robbery victim. The first clue is that she’s found in the sewer, and the second is that her custom designer bag was left with the body.

The detective (and one colleague in particular) starts interviewing people. With each person’s depiction of Sarah Kim, strange new facets of the business tycoon emerge. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult to pinpoint a motive… well, except for the fact that she was a fraud and her loyalty to anyone was nonexistent.

Supposedly, the American-born Sarah Kim (Shin Hye-sun) is simply a businesswoman. She’s the regional director of the luxury brand “Boudoir” and is tough but also strangely relatable. From the moment she arrives in Seoul, she acts in a way that cannot go unnoticed.

This is just one of the reasons why the NOX CEO Jeong Yeo-jin (Park Bo-kyung), who is desperate to move up in society, is thrilled when Sarah befriends her. As a result, she is also willing to enter into a collaboration that should take both brands to the next level. Of course, this will require a “small” investment on the CEO’s part.

Big mistake. Huge!

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
