TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA is finally coming out in theaters now. Up until this point, it has been enjoying a great festival run. This began with its Cannes film festival premiere in May 2026. Now, we all get to see what the fuss has been all about.

I have been eagerly awaiting the chance to watch it for myself. However, as excited as I was due to the casting, I was also nervous because I know this filmmaker doesn’t make “easy” movies.

Fortunately, I absolutely loved it. No, it’s not a simple or straightforward horror movie. Except it also kind of is, in retrospect, which is fascinating to me. To be honest, it had me from the opening credits, which are very much a part of the storyline, so do keep attention and enjoy the ride.

The magic of Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson

When I first heard about Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and learned that Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson would star in it, I was both surprised and thrilled. It was a duo I hadn’t even realized I wanted to watch, but I really wanted to see what they would bring to this.

Well, they brought actual movie magic to this horror movie, which has elements of slasher horror, romance, drama, and thriller. It’s a breathtaking queer romance in a roundabout coming-of-age story spanning decades. And also, it’s a movie about the lives of slasher horror franchises.

There are so many references to real slasher franchises that horror fans should be extremely entertained (in an almost giddy kind of way) by this element alone.

Welcome to Camp Miasma… good luck!

The key plot revolves around an indie filmmaker, Kris (Hannah Einbinder), getting the reins to the Camp Miasma slasher franchise. The many subpar sequels and spin-offs have resulted in a waning fandom. However, the original final girl, Billy (Gillian Anderson), just may want to come back to the franchise.

For Kris, this is a strange dream come true, as she had her sexual awakening with the very first Camp Miasma movie starring Billy. And now, her job is to resurrect the entire franchise. Nobody expects anything, but terms like “elevated horror” are thrown around, and all Kris wants is to get Billy involved with the project.

Billy, however, has been a recluse for years and has lived a life of solitude and mystery. Soon, Kris will learn why, and together, they will explore the first movie and the possible resurrection. And that’s all you need to know.

Just sit back and let it all unfold

You do not need (nor should you want to) hear everyone else share their opinion or interpretation of the plot. And yes, I recognize this seems silly to say in a movie review, but I don’t do resumes or interpretations of its core plot.

Instead, I try to help guide you towards the movies best suited to your taste. And if you like classic slashers, enjoy wild gore with fountains of blood, and want your characters to have some edge (preferably even of the queer variety), then this movie is for you.

If you are not a fan of horror movies that are kitsch, go over the top, dive into psychosexual plot drivers, and like to throw in some fierce and tricky twists, then maybe this isn’t for you. I was not sure this was for me, as I enjoyed elements of Jane Schoenbrun’s previous movie, but wasn’t completely crazy about it.

With Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, I got so much more than I ever imagined. In the best way possible. I didn’t even know I wanted this, which (once you’ve watched the movie) is very much on point.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma comes from writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. They previously wrote and directed I Saw the TV Glow and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. Personally, I have been intrigued with Jane Schoenbrun’s work so far, but not that crazy about their films.

Well, now I truly get the hype!

Along with the absolute stars of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, you’ll get to enjoy a brilliant supporting cast as well. This includes an amazing performance by Amanda Fix (Lowlifes) as a young version of Gillian Anderson’s character in the first Camp Miasma movie.

Also, we have Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, Kevin McDonald, and Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow) as the slasher villain “Little Death”.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the third feature film in Jane Schoenbrun’s body of work. These three movies have all been focused on themes of trans identity and queer horror. Up next, Jane Schoenbrun will write, direct, and Executive Produce the acclaimed graphic novel “Black Hole” as a TV Series for Netflix.

Plus, Jane Schoenbrun’s first novel, “Public Access Afterworld”, will be published by Hogarth this year. And yes, after watching this movie, that book will be on my “Want to read” list as well.
