Son of Sara – Movie Review (4/5)

SON OF SARA is a supernatural indie horror movie with a satanic twist and a queer love story. However, the two are not directly connected. If anything, the lesbians are the heroes of this story. Oh yeah, I’m a fan. A tiny but absolutely amazing cast brings the story to life. Read our full Son of Sara movie review here!

SON OF SARA is a true horror gem. Whether you love a sinister and demonic plot or just enjoy quirky characters that you want to keep watching, this is for you. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and went into watching this screener virtually blind (yeah, I see what I did there… and again).

Anyway, this meant that watching Son of Sara was just one amazing surprise after the next. And yes, sure, you will get annoyed with some of the decisions made along the way. However, not too much, and they are necessary to keep the story moving forward to its wild conclusion. And yes, it is wild!

Dinner at the mansion in the Woods

Son of Sara is the story of a very pregnant woman named Sara (Chloe Van Landschoot). She is already a good deal past her due date and is very done with being pregnant. Her hormones are all over the place, so she craves everything from intimacy to weird foods. The latter of which, she cannot keep down.

Soon, her cravings turn somewhat sinister. Or, at the very least, unsavory. A scene highlighting this new craving is a gorgeous parallel to a well-known scene from the amazing 2016 Raw by Julia Ducournau.

Just when things are already rather strange, the father of the child shows up. He invites her to dinner at his mom’s house, so that they can reconnect. At this time, Sara is in a new relationship with a caring and wonderful woman, Carol (Tymika Tafari), who does not like this idea at all.

And not just because she gets a really bad vibe from baby daddy Troy – as she should – but also because the dinner is at his mom’s house. That house is a mansion way out in the woods. Not a great idea when you’re already way past your due date and could go into labor at any time.

And yet, Sara feels she must, so she goes.

A very weird family dynamic

If going to a mansion way out in the woods seemed like a bad idea, just wait until you meet Troy’s mom. First of all, she is not shy. In any way, shape, or form. She knows what she wants and goes after it. Troy (Garrett Hnatiuk) is her baby boy, but hardly someone she’s particularly proud of.

However, getting a grandchild is something she has craved, so his bringing Sara is very welcome indeed.

Grandma-to-be Agnes is portrayed in the most amazing and insane way by Jane Moffat (Code 8: Part II, Mama). Really, I could watch an entire movie just with this character living her life. She has the best actions and lines of the movie, and Jane Moffat is just perfect as Agnes.

This dinner party soon turns into something very unexpected. Well, for those of us watching the movie and having the opening scene in mind, we have an idea of where it’s heading. Sara, however, has no chance of knowing what madness she’s soon trapped in.

Son of Sara comes from writer and director Houston Bone (I Don’t Know Who You Are), who also edited the movie. Now, having the filmmaker edit their own movie isn’t always the best choice. And yet, for this particular movie, I think it was exactly right. Overall, I am just so excited for this filmmaker. What a talent!

I was so wonderfully surprised (and even shocked, along the way) while watching Son of Sara, so I am really hoping for a sequel. Of course, with the full title being Son of Sara – Volume 1, there’s a good chance that writer-director Houston Bone already has a continuation in mind.

Well, sign me up, I am very ready (I think) to see where this story goes next. Who am I kidding? I am not ready at all, but I still want it. All the weird and crazy characters are my jam. As is, of course, the love story at the heart of this twisted and demonic tale.
