SOMEONE HAS TO KNOW is a Netflix series with eight episodes around 40 minutes each. And yes, this is too much for the plot of the series, so it results in slow-burn that goes much slower than necessary. This is a crime series and it’s based on a true crime, but obviously with many changes and things that have been dramatized.

Whether based on a true crime or not, the series is engaging enough. It’s just also too long. And yes, I recognize this is the third time I’ve mentioned the length already, but it really doesn’t do the storytelling any good. Still, I also have to highlight that the production quality is solid, and the actors delivers strong portrayals.

A disappearance turned into murder

Someone Has to Know focuses on a single mother’s searching ever more frantically for her son. With little help from the police, who are quick to go down all the usual theories of her son being a runaway or having taken his own life, she turns to the public. This is where the search for her son gains national attention.

As a result, a detective ends up making it his life mission as well. However, it will result in many dark (even deadly) secrets coming out. Not all related to the disappearances of this young man, but once the skeletons are out of the closet, it doesn’t matter much how or why.

While this begins as a disappearance, it’s a true crime case because the body of the young man is ultimately found.

The true crime this Someone Has To Know is inspired by is the real-life disappearance of Jorge Matute Johns. In this series, the plot focuses on three perspectives: his mother, who refuses to stop searching, the detective, who is consumed by wanting justice, and, finally, a priest, who hides a crucial secret. His knowledge could solve the case, but he is bound by his vow.

Someone Has to Know – Review | Netflix Crime Series

Based on a true crime that shook Chile

I was not familiar with the crime at the center of Someone Has To Know. This is a Netflix series from Chile (org. title: Alguien Tiene Que Saber), and I can imagine viewers from or in Chile will find this series fascinating for that very reason. Of course, we know from the very first episode that this is an unsolved crime with no convictions, so there’s no definitive answer in the end.

This is the case with many true crime-based productions, so I appreciate that it’s stated upfront. You will probably make up your own mind or have a prevailing theory. However, this will be based on choices made for this fictionalized Netflix series, so you may want to read up on it as well.

After all, reading the facts of a case often differs quite a lot from something made for entertainment purposes.

As mentioned several times already, I am not a huge fan of this series due to it being too long. However, it is also very well-made and I recognize how many in Chile will want to check it out. If you’re a fan of crime series, then give it a shot.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
