SECTOR 36 is a new Netflix movie from India. It’s a thriller inspired by the true story of a serial killer. His victims are mostly children, and while we don’t see too much violence, there is plenty of blood.

Also, we follow the killer from the beginning, but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying. The runtime is just over two hours (2 hours and 3 minutes, officially), but it’s so well-made that it doesn’t feel too long.

Inspired by true murders

Sector 36 is a movie that was inspired by true events surrounding the disappearance of several children from a local slum. At first, we see that desperate parents are unable to get the local police officer even to investigate.

After all, children run away all the time, and will probably return when they want to. This seems to be the attitude whether the child is 6 or 16 years old. Even the discovery of a human hand in the sewer can be explained as a monkey’s paw.

It’s grotesque, but also clearly how the police are used to dealing with these cases.

In that sense, this is as much a serial killer story as it is a spine-chilling look at society’s disparities.

When the serial killer is questioned by the police, one of the most chilling scenes plays out. Not just of this movie, but of any serial killer movie. The way this killer smiles and speaks of his crimes so matter-of-fact is brutal!

Sector 36 – Review | Netflix Serial Killer Thriller

Vikrant Massey is breathtaking

As the serial killer, Prem, we have Vikrant Massey. He is absolutely brilliant in this role. One second, he comes across as charming and kind, only to turn into a monster the next.

However, even as he speaks of his grotesque crimes (which include dismemberment and cannibalism), he thinks more about fixing his hair than feeling bad about his actions.

He clearly feels justified to do what he has done. After all, his victims came from the slum, and even the police couldn’t bother to investigate the cases.

While I have to highlight actor Vikrant Massey in the role of the serial killer, there are many other stellar performances in Sector 36. Including many of the child actors!

You may recognize an actor like Darshan Jariwala from the Netflix series The Serpent or one of his many roles in various movies and TV series.

Watch Sector 36 on Netflix now!

Sector 36 comes from director Aditya Nimbalkar and is a fierce directorial debut. It was written by Bodhayan Roychaudhury, and the storytelling is very straightforward. I love the focus on themes like power, crime, and social inequality.

Especially the exploration of all the gray nuances in society. How rich people can get away with so much, and how power can be bought so easily. While poor people are ignored and cases of their missing children go uninvestigated.

The final part of Sector 36 is almost like an epilogue. It’s scary in the sense that it feels hyper-realistic and focuses on how little change a case like this would likely bring about. Definitely one of the better serial-killer movies on Netflix!

Sector 36 is out on Netflix from Friday the 13th of September 2024.

Plot

When several children disappear at the hands of a serial killer in Delhi’s Sector 36, a corrupt cop is forced to pursue the chilling case at all costs.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
