SECRETS WE KEEP is a new Netflix series from Denmark (org. title: Reservatet). It’s a crime, thriller, mystery hybrid with six episodes. All have a runtime around 30-40 minutes, so it’s a fairly quick watch. Also, each episode ends on a cliffhanger.

We’re in the wealthy part of Denmark, which is located just North of Copenhagen, so the homes and people are gorgeous. Also, several of our characters tend to believe they can get away with everything. Can they? Watch this series to find out.

Justice versus Loyalty

In Secrets We Keep, it all seems to be going great for the two wealthy families who live right next door to each other. The mothers are best friends, as are the sons, while the fathers work together. Or, well, one works for the other, but still.

Also, both have Filipino au pairs hired. In Cecilie’s house, the au pair Angel is treated with respect and as part of the family. Or at the very least as a cherished guest who has been welcomed into the family. At Katarina’s house, the au pair, Ruby, is very much the hired help.

Ruby is often over at Cecilie’s house, and one night, she asks her for help, saying she wants to quit working at Katarina’s house. In an attempt to stay loyal to Katarina, Cecilie encourages Ruby to simply speak with her boss.

That’s the last time Cecilie will see Ruby.

Katarina storms into Cecilie’s house the next morning, stating that Ruby is gone. To Cecilie’s surprise, and even shock, nobody seems too worried or hurry to look for her. Despite Ruby’s things (including money and passport) having been left behind.

But what can Cecilie do except try to help her own au pair look for her missing friend? It turns out, there are many Filipino au pairs in the area, and none of them have any idea where Ruby could be.

Secrets We Keep – Review | Netflix Danish Thriller Series

Can money buy everything?

The case of the missing foreigner isn’t a huge priority for anyone, but a fresh-faced investigator, just hired, is eager to help. Aicha doesn’t care who has the most money or power; she has a job, and her job is to find and help Ruby.

Cecilie and Angel are always willing to help, but the host family of Ruby isn’t too bothered by her disappearance. This causes some of the first cracks in the friendship between Katarina and Cecilie, but it goes much deeper than that.

The power structures and privileges that ensure the wealthy and powerful remain wealthy and powerful also come into play.

This story could so easily have become extremely stereotypical in unrealistic ways, but it manages to avoid going there. Especially thanks to Marie Bach Hansen as Cecilie, who is loving and worried. Meanwhile, Danica Curcic toes the line perfectly as Katarina.

Many of these people constantly worry more about themselves than the missing girl. Danica Curcic’s Katarina personifies these feelings perfectly, while Marie Bach Hansen’s Cecilie calls everyone out on this. These two women make the story come together.

Watch Secrets We Keep on Netflix

The creator of Secrets We Keep (org. title: Reservatet) is Ingrid Topsøe, while Per Fly is the director of the six episodes. The episode writers are Ina Bruhn and Mads Tafdrup (Speak No Evil).

I loved how this Danish Netflix series managed to do a deep dive into one particular world while also being objective in many ways.

After all, this could also have been a working-class area, where someone with even fewer privileges went missing, and wasn’t a high priority for many. As someone who has witnessed the kinds of people featured in this series, I can vouch that they do exist.

For me, Marie Bach Hansen and Danica Curcic (The Mist series, Equinox, The Chestnut Man) are what makes the story come together just right. Is it predictable?! Yes, to a point. Still, getting there and being in the thick of it with everyone is quite the experience!

Secrets We Keep is on Netflix from May 15, 2025.

Plot

When a neighbor’s au pair vanishes from her wealthy suburb, Cecilie seeks answers — and unravels secrets that shatter her seemingly perfect world.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
