OUR TIMES on Netflix is a Mexican time travel movie (org. title: Nuestros tiempos). It’s a sci-fi romance drama adventure, so nowhere near as dark or sinister as what we usually cover. But I still enjoyed it immensely. Read our full Our Times movie review here!
OUR TIMES is a new Netflix movie from Mexico (org. title: Nuestros tiempos). It’s a time travel movie, so the core genre is sci-fi. In this case, the science fiction element is coupled with drama and romance as well as adventure – how can time travel not be adventure?!
In other words, we’re not on the darker side of sci-fi. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a story with some more intense subjects. The runtime is just 90 minutes, so it’s a crisp and tight story. I wasn’t particularly crazy about the ending of this Netflix movie, but I can appreciate it still.

Time travel in Mexico
In Our Times, we follow two scientist as they work on their time machine. The two are married and very much in love, but being in 1966, he is applauded for his intellect, and she is largely overlooked.
As the visionary physicists Nora and Héctor finally manage to time travel, they go a lot further than the expected 15 minutes into the future. They accidentally travel from 1966 to 2025.
AN ICONIC TIME TRAVEL CAR
The very first car our time-traveling couple sees as they travel to the future is a Delorean. Yes, the time machine car from Back to the Future which fans of the iconic time travel trilogy will undoubtedly recognize. A cool Easter Egg.
Obviously, this makes for a wildly different world for them both. Nora thrives in this world that empowers women in a way she could’ve never expected. Her husband, on the other hand, feels belittled as his wife is also recognized for her accomplishments.

Why not both?
In Our Times, it quickly becomes a choice between love and freedom. Or rather, their marriage over his comfort. While Nora finally experiences a world that acknowledges her intellect, Héctor feels left out and ignored.
Especially as March 8 (International Women’s Day) pays tribute to his wife. The how and why of everything is a little tricky and not very well covered in the story.
I mean, how they are able to exist in the present with their 1966 identities is largely ignored. It’s not the point of the story, but a few lines explaining how they managed this would have helped.
Of course, it is a lot to cover, so I understand the focus on explaining personal freedom and the technological advances. Especially the role of smartphones in 2025.

Chava Cartas (Counterattack) is the director of Our Times (org. title: Nuestros tiempos). The screenplay comes from Angélica Gudiño and Juan Carlos Garzón, and I love that a man and a woman collaborated on this one. In fact, I even feel it comes across in all the right ways.
Lucero (El gallo de oro) is pure magic as Nora, who thrives in 2025 and is finally recognized for all that she is. So does Benny Ibarra as Héctor, who longs for 1966, when he was admired for everything… even the things his wife should’ve shared credit on.
As a sci-fi romance adventure, Our Times works really well. I’m still on the fence about that ending, but at the same time, I have no idea what (if anything) would’ve worked better. If you like time travel movies, then I urge you to check out this one on Netflix.
Our Times is on Netflix from June 11, 2025.
