ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING Season 4 is a delicious treat for fans of the genre-hybrid series. As always, it’s a whodunnit with crime, thriller, and mystery to get the plot going.

Also, there is a lot of comedy, which for season 4 also includes a lot of meta layers. While the series has featured wonderful guest stars since its very first season, season 4 delivers on this more than ever. Plus, many guest stars from previous seasons.

Perhaps the best season yet?!

Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building wasn’t for everyone. In fact, for a while, it wasn’t even really my jam. Or rather, it was, but something still felt off. While I did feel season 3 ended on a high note, season 4 manages to start and stay on this high note!

When season 3 ended, it was with yet another murder. This time, it was Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch). She was murdered while in Charles’ apartment and dressed as Charles.

Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are forced to question whether Sazz or Charles was the intended victim. Also, our successful podcast trio goes all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the “Only Murders in the Building”-podcast.

In other words, our podcasters have plenty on their plates, as Hollywood and yet another case of amateur sleuthing is demanding their attention. Of course, the case wins, so they dive into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents; The Westies.

Also, the actors playing them in the movie can use their sleuthing as inspiration, so they tend to tag along. No matter how much their presence is unwanted by the podcasters.

Amazing cast additions…

While many (many!) actors have been named as being in season 4 of Only Murders in the Building, not many of their roles in the series have been named. And I’m not about to spoil it for you here.

Both because we’ve been asked not to spoil it and because we avoid spoilers here.

However, I can say that as the Hollywood versions of Mabel, Charles, and Oliver respectively, we’re getting Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis as themselves. Or, you know, versions of themselves.

Eva Longoria especially delivers some brilliant takes on what people think of her. Of course, we’ve known since Desperate Housewives that she has wit and attitude with perfect comedic timing.

Also, Da’Vine Joy Randolph is back as the police detective working the same case as our podcaster. And Meryl Streep is back as the character who was introduced in season 3.

… and brilliant guest stars

Overall, we will see some familiar faces from previous seasons. After all, season 1 is being turned into a Hollywood movie and the actors are trying to reconnect with their characters.

For this reason, we’re going over events from the previous three seasons (podcast seasons). There are flashbacks, dreams, and nightmares that allow for many guest stars.

Among the brilliant guest stars, you can (and should!) look forward to are Richard Kind, Jane Lynch, Melissa McCarthy, Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and more.

When you get to episode 7, you’ll do well to pay attention to Selena Gomez whenever Molly Shannon is in the scene with her. She is clearly struggling to contain laughter, which is so endearing.

It reminded me of Jennifer Aniston in some of the most iconic Friends scenes.

Watch season 4 of Only Murders in the Building

I have loved this series since it began. It was an absolute treat for me to watch each and every episode, and I could not get enough of the characters. Especially the three main characters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez).

However, I also came to love those supporting characters and the guest stars. Everything about this show just made me smile and wonder how it was all connected. This season is no exception and I can only imagine people will adore the meta layer.

Everything you may have found silly or odd will most likely be pointed out by some character during season 4. A stellar way of owning the crazy shenanigans and plot twists of previous seasons.

As always, Only Murders in the Building comes from co-creators and writers Steve Martin and John Hoffman. They also executive produce along with Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal. A winning combination of talent!

The season has 10 episodes – just like the previous seasons – and we’ve been able to screen the first seven episodes for this review. In other words, we’ll be waiting with bated breath for the conclusion of this whodunnit right alongside everyone else.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 premieres on Hulu & Disney+ on August 27, 2024, with new episodes streaming on Tuesdays.

Plot

Charles, Oliver & Mabel wrestle with the shocking events at the end of season three surrounding Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki. Questioning whether Sazz or Charles was the intended victim, our trio’s investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. As our amateur sleuths race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey – traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
