Trauma in the Alps

With season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, we’re back with the enigmatic healing guru Masha (Nicole Kidman) as she continues her very unique approach to healing trauma in her patients. From Season 1, we learned that she uses drugs to help her patients.

Also, we learned that it worked!

Still, giving people drugs (naturally sourced mushrooms, mostly, but still) without their knowledge or consent has landed Masha in a lot of trouble. And yet, it has also resulted in a bestseller describing the events of season 1 and people lining up to be patients.

In Season 2, a whole new batch of “wellness-seekers” arrive to try Masha’s very alternative approach to healing. This time, set at a mysterious Alpine resort. The kind where people can’t find them easily, so Masha won’t be getting served papers about new trials against her.

This time, patients know the drill

Unlike the patients in season 1, all the people seeking Masha’s help now know what to expect. Even if they haven’t read up on the details, she has been in the press so much that everyone knows she uses drugs for her therapy.

Again, based on her previous patients, they also know it works.

Once again, Masha has chosen her “guests” carefully and has a plan for how they will interact. All meant to lead to transformative paths of betterment and happiness. This all sounds very happy-go-lucky, but we are dealing with several unhappy people.

This includes Masha herself, who will, once again, be confronting her own trauma and demons as well. Can she make a success of this second batch, or will it end in disaster?

You’ll have to watch the second season to find out. Fortunately, it’s a fun (if also very dark due to the subject of trauma) ride. Not least thanks to the stellar cast of Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2.

The stars of this second season are Lena Olin, Maximilian Klas, Henry Golding, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, Lucas Englander, King Princess, Murray Bartlett (The Last of Us), Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Jagged Mind), Mark Strong, and Aras Aydin.

Watch Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu now

The Hulu and Amazon MGM Studios series hails from David E. Kelley, Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories, Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films, and FIFTH SEASON. FIFTH SEASON also handles the distribution of the series, which streams on Prime Video outside the US.

Executive producers on Season 2 of the series include David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman, and Liane Moriarty, author of the book it’s based on. If you enjoyed the first season, then you will definitely want to check out this follow-up season as well.

For me, the story as well as the cast make it all come together yet again. I love trying to guess what makes the characters tick, but I am clearly no Masha, so I don’t get it right too many times.

The second season premieres with two episodes at launch. Following this, you’ll be getting two weekly episodes, making this a month-long event.

Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 premieres on Hulu on May 21, 2025. And on Prime Video outside the US from May 22, 2025.

Plot

A new batch of wellness-seekers arrives at a mysterious Alpine resort looking for transformative paths to betterment and happiness. During their stay, the guests partake in unconventional methods to reach their goals, while Masha is forced to confront some past demons … threatening to destroy both her own personal wellness and that of her guests.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
