NEVER AFTER DARK is a Japanese Horror Movie that hits all the right notes. One of the most haunting horror movies in a long time for me. And this is coming from someone who usually isn’t a huge J-Horror fan, as I much prefer South Korean productions, but this one just works. Read our full Never After Dark movie review here!
NEVER AFTER DARK is a horror movie from Japan, but it doesn’t feel like a typical J-Horror production. Sure, it has elements of that, but it also has a character-driven storyline that reminded me much more of South Korean genre productions. As someone who adores genre movies (and series) from South Korea, I loved that this Japanese production went that route instead of the Ringu or Ju-on vibe that J-Horror is known for.
For the record, this is still a supernatural horror movie. The kind that delivers jump scares, a glorious ghost story, and sinister horror. Oh yeah, I am a fan, and I hope this movie will reach a huge audience. Also, I can easily imagine a U.S. remake of this one. Just as we saw with The Ring and The Grudge franchises that were based on Ringu and Ju-on, respectively.

Occupation: Guiding restless spirits
Never After Dark is the story of Airi (Moeka Hoshi). She’s something known as “a wandering medium”, which means her job is essentially helping and guiding restless spirits to move on. Most importantly, she helps them leave the world of the living behind. As in, she stops whatever sinister haunting events her clients are tormented by.
In this particular case, Airi has been summoned to an isolated country house. Here, she will soon come face to face with a different and rather grotesque apparition. This entity is unlike anything Airi has experienced before, so she needs more information to deal with the spirit.
Airi starts digging into the history of the house, which has quite a few secrets. One secret in particular has a huge impact on the current case. As a result, Airi becomes the prey and is hunted by an unpredictable force: Not from the supernatural, but the living!
Emotionally haunting horror with a fierce bite
What makes Never After Dark work so extremely (and surprisingly) well for me was the emotional toll. This is an emotionally haunting horror movie with a fierce bite. It has moments that will make you jump, want to look away, or even just be shocked. I enjoy all of that but also suspect it will be a brutal watch for many.
Just as any good horror movie should be – if you ask me, anyway.
And if you’re reading this review, I would say that actually does constitute you asking me, so there.
In any case, along with a gorgeous vibe and style full of sinister moments, Never After Dark also has a wonderful cast. Moeka Hoshi (Shōgun) does carry this movie on her shoulders in the leading role as Airi, and she is amazing. Also, in key roles are Kento Kaku (House of Ninjas), Kurumi Inagaki, Mutsuo Yoshioka (Cloud), Bokuzo Masana, and Tae Kimura.
I would say that each of them, in their own way, delivers eerily unforgettable performances.
Watch Never After Dark in theaters
Never After Dark is directed and written by Dave Boyle. Not to be confused with Danny Boyle of 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. Dave Boyle developed, produced, and directed the Netflix series House of Ninjas. Yet another example of a Japanese genre production that I enjoyed.
MORE AMAZING GENRE PRODUCTIONS FROM JAPAN
Be sure to check out Gannibal which is an amazing series on Hulu >
This new horror movie also comes from Signal 181, which is the same Tokyo-based production company that made the Netflix series House of Ninjas. Signal 181 hopes to bridge Japan and the United States with these genre productions. Something the name also reflects by combining the countries’ calling codes of +1 and +81 into “Signal 181”.
The company was founded by actor-producer Kento Kaku and director Dave Boyle, so they are simply following up their global series success with this horror movie. Hopefully, this movie will also be a global success. It certainly is good enough that it deserves to be a hit!
Never After Dark gets its U.S. theatrical release on September 25, 2026.
Plot
NEVER AFTER DARK follows Airi (Hoshi), a wandering medium who spends her life guiding restless spirits out of the world of the living. Summoned to an isolated country house, she comes face to face with a grotesque apparition with powers that defy Airi’s experience. As she digs deeper into the house’s past, a secret comes to light — and Airi finds herself hunted by a far more unpredictable force. For the first time, her greatest adversary is not the supernatural, but the living.
