MY SAD DEAD is a Netflix horror series from Argentina (org. title: Mis muertos tristes). It’s a supernatural and psychological horror story about a doctor who has supernatural abilities. She can see and hear the dead and will soon learn that she isn’t the only family member with this gift.
The Netflix series is based on Mariana Enríquez’s novel of the same name, which I have not read. However, watching this series made me curious about the book, so I may just have to check it out. All four episodes of this miniseries were watched for this review. As much as this is a strange experience, it’s also a fascinating watch, so give it a shot.

She can see dead people
In My Sad Dead, the 60-year-old doctor, Emma (Mercedes Morán), can see and hear the dead. This has always been the case for Emma, so she’s used to dealing with ghosts always craving her attention. She’s also all too used to having everyone around her think she’s crazy.
As a result, Emma is rather reclusive and uses a lot of satire. She is fierce and fed up, so you can come at her all you want; she does not care!
When My Sad Dead begins, it’s with the death of Emma’s mother. Emma has been caring for her ailing mother, and she continues to see her mother as a ghost, so she hasn’t really lost her. Of course, as the title indicates, Emma is haunted by sad ghosts. They all suffered violent deaths and are confused, or have some unfinished business.
This means she hears a lot of wailing or crying.
All. The. Time.
Again, this has always been the case for Emma, but even after one episode, I’m amazed that she’s functioning. Impressive that she was a doctor, which means even more people at all stages of life (and death) are constantly around her.
Sharing the “gift”
Very early on, the other characters in My Sad Dead will learn what Emma has been dealing with. This happens when her niece, Julie (Carolina Sánchez Álvarez), arrives. It’s obvious that she has the same gift as her aunt, and life has not been easy for her either. Without giving My Sad Dead spoilers, I can reveal that she has found a very unique way of dealing with having this gift.
Julie is very content with the solution, which always brings a smile to her face.
In any case, a disturbing event at the end of episode 1 will soon result in a strange change. All the people living in the neighborhood, which has long been abandoned by the government, will experience the change. Suddenly, most of them can also feel the presence and hear the wailings of those who have gone.
Now, they want to hear from Emma, who wants no part of it. She’s had to deal with this on her own for decades, so they can handle it themselves as well. Of course, Emma is also a doctor (even if she was forced into retirement), so she will end up helping despite herself.
The entire neighborhood finds itself trapped in this new world surrounded by those who are no longer breathing, but somehow still there. And that is all you need to know. It’s a slice of life for the people living in this abandoned neighborhood, with Emma’s family home at the center.
Watch the My Sad Dead miniseries on Netflix now
My Sad Dead is directed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Spencer, Maria), who also gave us the fascinating Netflix movie El Conde, and produced the Netflix series Someone Has to Know. Pablo Larraín also helped write the screenplay for My Sad Dead alongside author Mariana Enríquez, who wrote the book it’s based on. Finally, we also have Anastasia Ayazi and Guillermo Calderón on board as writers.
It should be noted that “My Sad Dead” was originally a short story, so to create this longer storyline, passages and characters from other works by the author have been woven in. This includes “Julie” and “A Sunny Place for Shady People“.
My Sad Dead premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it was presented in a feature-length format. Following this world premiere, it has now premiered as a four-episode series on Netflix. Explaining the plot of this series is virtually impossible without giving away too many spoilers. Just watch it and see for yourself.
For me, Mercedes Morán and Carolina Sánchez Álvarez absolutely steal the show, but the plot itself is fascinating enough to keep me watching. Those two just sell it extremely well to me, which is why I could not stop watching it.
My Sad Dead (org. title: Mis muertos tristes) premiered on Netflix on September 24, 2026.

Plot
Emma, a recently retired doctor who can see the dead, tries to process her mother’s death and her own unresolved matters. The arrival of her niece Julie and the murder of three teenagers in Piedrabuena, a suburban neighborhood marked by violence, trigger a strange phenomenon that breaks the fragile balance between the living and the dead. What had been Emma’s burden until then begins to spread throughout the neighborhood: the dead start to make themselves present, and no one will be able to escape the sound of their own ghosts.
