MURDER IN MONACO on Netflix is a new True Crime documentary feature. This is wild and full of conspiracy and extravagant, eccentric characters. One more extreme than the former. Also, it has so many twists and turns, it’s perfect for anyone who enjoyed The Jinx or Tiger King. Read our full Murder in Monaco documentary review here!
MURDER IN MONACO is a new Netflix documentary with a tight runtime of 90 minutes. This could actually have been longer, with all the ways it escalates, but I prefer this very focused style instead. It’s all about the murder of one of the wealthiest men, but it becomes so much more.
If you’ve watched the trailer, you already know that many people are interviewed for this true crime documentary. However, the trailer is only a taste of what the actual documentary feature delivers on. You do not want to miss out on this one. It’s a perfect treat for anyone who likes the wacky ways of both The Jinx and Tiger King.

Avoid spoilers for Murder in Monaco
I do not want to spoil Murder in Monaco for you, so I won’t go into details. Usually, with any true crime documentary, I don’t shy away from speaking about the subject. After all, with true crime, the case has usually already been covered extensively in the press.
The same goes for the core case of Murder in Monaco. However, there is also quite a twist towards the end, which changes everything. Or maybe it doesn’t?! That’s sort of the point: You simply do not know who to trust. Maybe no one?!
It all began in Monaco in 1999. Or actually, there are details from earlier that also play a part, but the core true crime case is about a death in Monaco in 1999.
Or actually, this isn’t even accurate, as two people die.
A billionaire… and his nurse
The billionaire banker, Edmon Safra, is found dead in his penthouse in Monaco. A fire has erupted in his huge penthouse, and he dies from smoke inhalation. So does his nurse, but she’s more of a footnote in the story, which is as gross as it sounds.
Two people died, and yet it’s all about his death. Sure, she died because she was with him, but still, the lack of acknowledging her death is grotesque and a brutal detail. Maybe the one element I would have wanted was just a tiny bit of recognition for. Then again, this Netflix documentary isn’t about that.
Instead, it’s a true crime documentary about the mystery behind Edmond Safra’s death. Was it an accident, a conspiracy, an actual murder, or something else entirely?!
Well, before all has been said and done, you will probably have changed your mind a few times as to what you believe. You will be presented with facts, but the conclusion (regardless of any convictions) will be up to you in the end.

The director of Murder in Monaco is Hodges Usry, and he will ultimately play a larger role than he ever anticipated. Not due to any fault on his part, but rather how he’s involved by the main character. The main “character” of Murder in Monaco is Ted Maher, who was the person accused of having killed Edmond Safra (and the aforementioned nurse).
Again, I do not want to give away spoilers, but Ted Maher does visibly seem to age a decade or two during the four years it took to make this Netflix documentary. It is fascinating… and sad and scary. Ted Maher is certainly what made me compare Murder in Monaco to both The Jinx and Tiger King. However, so are the wild “supporting” characters.
Especially Lady Colin Campbell, who you will undoubtedly have noticed from the trailer, if you’ve watched it. If not, she is bound to be someone who will get you intrigued. She appears early on as she knew several of the key players in this true crime case. Also, she is part of the documentary until the very end. It’s brilliant – as is she.
In fact, I would love to watch a documentary all about the life of Lady Colin Campbell. From her Wikipedia page alone, it’s obvious that her life story is worthy of that… maybe even a documentary series?!
Do not rob yourself of watching this wild ride of a true crime documentary. The eccentric and super-wealthy people involved are reason enough to check this out.
Murder in Monaco premieres on Netflix on December 17, 2025.
