MILLION-FOLLOWER DETECTIVE on Netflix is a Crime-Thriller series with eight episodes. The editing is wild with this one in the sense that there are an extremely large number of cuts. Every few seconds, at the most, there’s a change. It’s made with a social media approach, which makes sense for the plot, but does not make for good television or storytelling. MILLION-FOLLOWER DETECTIVE is a new Netflix series with eight episodes and quite a lot of deaths. There is a mystery at the heart of this crime thriller, which you will get quite a lot of clues to within the very first episode. And yes, eight episodes are too much for this series, but the storyline includes many characters, so there’s plenty to tell.
I can’t say I enjoyed watching this series, but that’s mostly due to it wanting a lot from me; It’s giving me lots of characters and input, while also cutting constantly, which does not make for strong storytelling. The idea that people have short attention spans doesn’t really match viewers binge-watching series all the time. And yet, it seems to be the mantra for this production, which ruins the story for me.

A Social Media Influencer predicts the future
With Million-Follower Detective, the story begins when influencer Yen Wei (Kent Tsai) is shot. This happens when he attempts to attack the police, though it does look more like he wants the police to shoot him. Also known as “suicide by cop”.
Soon, veteran detective Chen Chia-jen (Ekin Cheng) comes to realize that the famous influencer was acting under someone’s orders. Another clue comes from Technology Criminal Investigator Li Hsin-ping (Patty Lee), who joins the detective because she has discovered a chilling pattern.
It would appear that several influencer murders can be directly linked to a masked online prophet. This person, a social media influencer in their own right, is known as the Witch Baba. For some time, Witch Baba has been making all kinds of eerie predictions, and they always come true. We’re taking a 100% correct prediction rate, which includes four murders.
MORE SOCIAL MEDIA CRIME CASES…
Quite a few true crime cases have played out via social media – like this one >
Obviously, this means the Witch Baba’s prophecies will need to be investigated. Not just by the police, but also by other influencers and online sleuths. This draws in more than one million people.
Before episode 1 of Million-Follower Detective is over, you will get a huge clue, which detective Chen will also catch onto. He realizes the case may be connected to his estranged daughter (Chen Yan-fei). To get to the bottom of everything, he starts working with the influencer Lin Ting-yu (Shou Lou). However, he may not be able to handle the truth.
Slow down and let the story evolve
If you watch the trailer, you’ll probably notice an extreme amount of cuts. Sort of like we see at the very beginning of many trailers before the “trailer starts now” messaging. Very much made for the supposed short attention span of many, thanks to social media. Well, that’s how this entire series is made, and I have to admit that I am not a fan.
That’s not to say that having many cuts can’t be efficient. It absolutely can, and a movie like Darren Aronofsky‘s Requiem for a Dream (2000) is a great example of that. An example I use because it was applauded for how it utilized these cuts. For that movie, we were meant to experience the drug-fueled craziness of many characters.
However, in Million-Follower Detective, it’s supposed to mirror social media. Well, just like hand-held cameras do not mirror our viewing experience when jumping all over the place (it just gives the viewer motion sickness), these many, many cuts do not mirror any social media doom-scrolling.
Also, this is a series with eight 45-minute episodes. Just use fast-paced cuts when it makes sense, and not to “create a vibe”. This is long-format storytelling, not a TikTok post or a YouTube short that needs to catch the attention of someone scrolling. Slow down and let the storytelling work naturally.
Watch Million-Follower Detective on Netflix now
The new Netflix series from Taiwan comes from writer-director Shaun Su. Million-Follower Detective is not a series that worked for me. I just did not care for the style. Not the visual style or wild editing cuts, nor the actual storytelling. As such, there really wasn’t much for me to enjoy in this.
Having said that, I know that I did think the premise sounded intriguing, so maybe it would have grown on me if I had watched the entire series. For this review, I only watched the first few episodes. That was more than enough for me, and I don’t plan on watching the rest. That is the reason why our rating isn’t higher.
However, I recognize others may enjoy the style, and if that’s the case, then I’m sure it’ll be an interesting watch. My suggestion is that you watch the trailer first. If that doesn’t discourage you, then by all means give this Taiwanese production a chance. It isn’t bad, it just really is not for me.
Million-Follower Detective is out on Netflix globally from February 12, 2026.
