I Will Find You – Review | Netflix Series

I WILL FIND YOU on Netflix is a new Harlan Coben series, and the first one to actually play out in the United States. Eight episodes may seem like a lot, but with the crime mystery and the conspiracy thriller plot, there is plenty of story to tell. Read our full I Will Find You series review here!

Harlan Coben’s I WILL FIND YOU is a Netflix series in the thriller, crime, and mystery genres. So, pretty much like all the other Harlan Coben productions. And I cannot get enough, so I was ready for this one as well. Interestingly, this is the first Netflix adaptation of a Harlan Coben book to actually take place in the U.S., like the author’s books.

We’ve seen Netflix series based on Harlan Coben novels set in Poland, Spain, the U.K., and France. Anywhere but the U.S., it would seem. Of course, there is also the Prime Video series based on Harlan Coben’s YA book series, which was sadly cancelled after just one season. A shame, as it was well-made and seemingly had a big and active fan base.

Anyway, getting back to this series, I Will Find You should please those of you who have enjoyed previous Harlan Coben adaptations. It certainly hit a lot of the sweet crime mystery spots for me.

An extremely brutal premise

With I Will Find You, Harlan Coben has crafted one of the more brutal premises for a Netflix series: A man, David, is in prison for having killed his young son. He never stops claiming his innocence, and suddenly, the son he supposedly murdered appears in the background of a random photo.

This in itself is an extremely brutal premise, but wait (as they say in the infomercials), there’s more!

The man serving life for having killed his own son is also being targeted by someone who wants him dead. Or rather, when I say someone, I should almost say “something”, as it appears to be a group or conspiracy of some sort. This one goes deep and gets dark. People are being paid off left and right, and if money won’t do the trick, then threatening loved ones usually works.

David finds himself in a position where he has to get out of prison. Not just to find his possibly still living son, but also simply to stay alive long enough to find answers. Soon, I Will Find You becomes about staying free and solving this sinister mystery.

An Aussie leading the first U.S. production

I actually adore Sam Worthington, but I can’t help but find it a little comical that an Australian actor plays the lead in this first U.S.-based Harlan Coben series. Of course, Sam Worthington (The Titan) delivers a strong performance as David, and I think casting him is spot-on for the character. As is the actor portraying his father, and the two actually sound eerily similar.

Of course, I Will Find You also features lots of American actors. We have Britt Lower (Severance, Sender) in one of the biggest roles, as the ex-sister-in-law of David, and I am always happy to see her on the screen. However, British actor Erin Richards (Gotham) plays David’s ex-wife, and her new husband is portrayed by Aaron Ashmore (The Retreat).

Then, in other key roles that I won’t reveal here are Eric Johnson (Disappearance at Clifton Hill), Milo Ventimiglia (Devil’s Gate), Jonathan Tucker (God Is a Bullet), Madeleine Stowe (IT: Welcome to Derry), and Clancy Brown (The Penguin).

Hunting down David – and trying to figure out how he ever managed to escape and what his end goal is – are two awesome agents. The rising star of the FBI, Sarah Greer (Logan Browning of The Perfection), and the no-nonsense, experienced senior agent, Max Williams (Chi McBride).

Author of the 2023 novel, Harlan Coben, is an executive producer on I Will Find You, along with showrunner and creator Robert Hull. If the name Robert Hull sounds familiar, you may have watched some of his previous work on Quantum Leap or Alcatraz.

The acclaimed genre director Brad Anderson is also on board as an executive producer and director of multiple episodes. Brad Anderson directed movies like The Machinist (2004) and Session 9 (2001). More recently, he also directed episodes of TV series such as Devil in Ohio and Clickbait.

Whether the crime mystery of the murdered son (or whoever was actually killed) or the conspiracy thriller draws you in, both elements combined make for a very intense and fascinating ride on yet another Harlan Coben trip into the best and worst of human nature.
