I KNOW EXACTLY HOW I DIE is an indie horror movie with a slasher plot. The practical effects are gorgeous, which means that one of the few times we see CGI used, it almost threw me for a loop. It was not good, and while I understand it was one of the more difficult practical effects, I really wish they had stuck with it.

Then again, if one scene featuring bad CGI is what stuck out to me as distinctly bad, then we’re in a pretty good place with this indie slasher. And it is well-made and entertaining. One of the lead actors does fall a bit flat at times, but it’s still not enough to ruin the overall experience for me. Especially due to the casting, working very well for this story overall.

When Writer’s Block Turns Deadly

With I Know Exactly How I Die, we’re not dealing with a homicidal author. Or, well, not directly. While the author does write horror stories of the slasher variety, he is not a violent person himself. In fact, he isn’t really very good with blood, which may seem strange, but writing about blood and seeing blood are two very different things.

In any case, our author in I Know Exactly How I Die is dealing with a bad case of writer’s block. Probably connected to the fact that his girlfriend just broke up with him, and he has a deadline coming up. As a result, he goes on a short road trip to stay in a hotel, where he can get some peace and quiet.

Well, he doesn’t get much peace or quiet thanks to the couple in the room next door. They are either fighting violently or making up physically. This just about drives our author crazy, but then he discovers something very odd; During a stroke of inspiration, he writes a quick chapter, which appears to come true.

Yes, he is now writing the events happening in the hotel. Of course, he tries to control all kinds of events at this hotel, which (obviously!) will result in some pretty bad and creepy choices on his part. Not least, as he is hellbent on being the hero in his own story.

A Tiny Cast in One Location

I Know Exactly How I Die is the kind of story that plays out almost exclusively in one location (a hotel) and with a tiny cast, as we deal with the people staying (or working) there. It’s not a busy hotel, so most rooms are empty.

As the horror novelist, Rian Burman, we have Rushabh Patel, who also executive produces this movie. And that may explain why he plays the lead role, because as good as he is in some scenes, he is very flat in others. Interestingly, he works best as Rian when the guy is a klutz and shows himself at his worst.

Those scenes that do not work as well seem to be inspired by the Mark Wahlberg school of acting. This mainly involves sounding out of breath when things get scary or action-fueled. Yeah, I am not a fan of those, but the talent of Rushabh Patel is obvious in the comedy-fueled scenes, so I’m sure he can work on the rest.

As Katie, the woman who stays at the hotel and is the star of his novel, we have Stephanie Hogan (Stag), and she is great in all kinds of scenes. Also, working really well is the woman running the hotel. Her name is Naja, and she’s portrayed by Rawya El Chab (Stockade), who makes it all come together in a very organic way.

Even when the plot evolves in ways that are supernatural in terms of a writer making his story come to life, and trying to control events.

The director of I Know Exactly How I Die is Alexandra Spieth, who ensures a tight pace and some gorgeous shots. She previously directed Stag and created and starred in the web-series [Blank] My Life. The screenplay comes from Mike Corey, and I do really like the plot and evolution of this story.

As already mentioned, the star Rushabh Patel is the executive producer. As a result, this movie is billed as “Rushabh Patel’s I Know Exactly How I Die“, which I am not a fan of. Unless Rushabh Patel is famous in ways I am not familiar with – nor is IMDb, as this is his first and so far only credit there.

This is like people wondering if Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is connected to Stranger Things, because the media keeps referring to it as a new show from The Duffer Brothers. Sure, they produced it, but Haley Z. Boston created the original story and wrote the screenplay. And she’s not even a newcomer.

Okay, rant over, but I just don’t understand the marketing and press decisions of it all.

Anyway, as already mentioned, the practical effects in I Know Exactly How I Die are gorgeous. Any slasher fan should enjoy the concept of the plot as well as those amazing practical effects. And yet, you will have to endure a little terrible CGI, but this is an indie production, so budget restraints come into play. Of course, so does choosing the best talent, and that did not happen for CGI here!

I Know Exactly How You Die is out on VOD from April 7, 2026. You can rent it on Digital HD from your preferred platform, including Prime Video and Fandango at Home. The film will also be available on DVD.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
