GOODY GOODY on Shudder is a horror movie about a home birth that goes terribly wrong. And that’s just the beginning. It’s set in a cabin in the woods (oh yeah, like any good horror movie), and then a raging blizzard hits. This in itself is a nightmare, but it’s about to get worse. GOODY GOODY is a Shudder Original, and while I feel like I’ve said this quite a few times, I’m going to say it again: Do not watch this if you’re pregnant or a loved one is about to give birth. My sister-in-law gave birth to twins just a week before I watched this, and if she was still pregnant, I don’t think I could’ve stomached watching this one.

I hope (and, frankly, assume) that you recognize this is a compliment. This movie is so damn brutal and efficient that it could convince someone to never ever get pregnant. Okay, I’m exaggerating… but not by much. Also, the runtime is 1 hour and 20 minutes, and horror fans know what this can mean: a horror movie that holds its audience in a vice of pure terror!

A Home Birth Horror Movie

I am almost sorry to keep calling Goody Goody “a home birth horror movie”, but that really is the simplest version of the plot. Also, it’s the one that doesn’t offer any spoilers. However, I can elaborate enough to say that in flashbacks, we learn the midwife didn’t like the idea of this particular home birth either.

You see, the birth in Goody Goody takes place in a fairly rural cabin in the woods. This could be okay (or okay-ish) if it were during the summer. However, the due date of Goody (yes, that is the name of the pregnant woman in this movie) is in the dead of winter.

Obviously, this is concerning, as we all know this means the risk of being stuck out in the woods. Of course, this is exactly what happens, and the midwife is mostly upset with herself for ever going along with this plan in the first place.

However, as it were, the midwife also had a strange sensation that she would be needed. Whether a sixth sense or a premonition, she knew that Goody’s chances of a good delivery would improve with her there.

As a result, they are now stuck in a cabin in the woods.

The birth was going according to plan, but suddenly contractions stop developing as expected. Also, she is suddenly less dilated. It’s not a good sign. Neither are the contractions when they do happen. Good Lord, any woman watching this is surely not in a hurry to get pregnant.

For the record, these are not “normal” contractions, but they are extremely efficient for this horror story.

Four people and one cabin

Goody Goody only has four people in the story. Well, not counting the baby. We have Goody in the role of the expectant and then birthing mother. Goody is portrayed by Samantha Robinson (Cam, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood), who will show many sides of her talents before this is all said and done. Absolutely amazing, and also desperately horrifying.

As the midwife, Sarah, we have Colleen Foy (Station 19, The Hunting Party), who is essentially the main protagonist. She’s the one we follow as she tries to find a solution that can save both mother and child. The father of the child, Jayson, is portrayed by Colby Hollman (Fear the Walking Dead). He portrays Jayson as a loving man and father-to-be who wants only to support his wife in her struggles.

Finally, there is Jayson’s sister, Candace, who takes on the role of Doula to help Sarah with midwife-related duties and is a strong support for Goody as well. Candace is portrayed by Zoe Renee (Master, Tell Me Lies), who offers a different kind of energy, which keeps everything moving along.

As a result of Candace helping Sarah with the birthing issues, the two will end up having to plan solutions together. Fortunately, they are a solid and productive team!

This home birth horror movie (with quite a few twists) comes from Raymond Creamer. And yes, that is his name. Also, yes, I think that’s pretty cool. It’s the kind of name you just have to lean into, I suppose. And after watching this Raymond Creamer Shudder Original, I think we all ought to put some respect on that name.

Also, I love that practical effects are used in this horror movie instead of badly made CGI. I recognize that CGI can be gorgeous and amazing, but for this kind of horror story, you need to go with practical effects, so I applaud that choice. The home birth issues in Goody Goody are of a very sinister kind. As the complications arise and escalate, this will become very evident.

And that is all I am saying about that!

With a runtime of just 80 minutes, this is not a horror movie you’ll want to skip. In fact, I wouldn’t even wait too long to watch it if you want to avoid spoilers. And, trust me, you will want to avoid all spoilers for Goody Goody and just let it blow you away.

Goody Goody starts streaming on Shudder on September 18, 2026.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
