Furious – Review | Hulu Series

FURIOUS on Hulu is a serial killer series about a female serial killer. She doesn’t kill indiscriminately, which becomes obvious to the FBI Agent working the case. In fact, she appears to have a list. And yes, you can expect to root for her – at least sometimes. Read our full Furious series review here and start watching on Hulu!

FURIOUS on Hulu is a crime thriller series about a female serial killer. We follow both the serial killer and the FBI agent closing in on her, so we get to know them both. In the two lead roles as a serial killer and an FBI agent, we have Lola Petticrew and Emmy Rossum, respectively. Both are stealing scenes left and right. I loved it!

The series has eight episodes, and if I weren’t a human being who needed to sleep, I would have binge-watched all eight episodes in one sitting. This Hulu series is extremely well-made, and the story grabbed a fierce hold of me from the very first episode. It’s probably good that it’s premiering with “just” three episodes.

A very relatable serial killer

In Furious, we follow FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) as she finds herself on the hunt for a female serial killer. As most who know anything about serial killer profiling will know, female serial killers often choose their victims carefully. Not just indiscriminately or by chance.

I mean, this was even the case for Aileen Wuornos. Even if those who wished to sentence her to death refused to listen. The system broke her long before she ever started killing.

In any case, the mysterious and calculating female serial killer (Lola Petticrew) in Furious may have more in common with FBI agent Alice Black than either of them ever anticipated. Not least being hurt by men, who get away with all wrongdoings. They may even be awarded or promoted when they should be imprisoned.

While one should never root for the criminal, it becomes a little trickier when her victims are also criminals. The kind that never pays for their crimes. Or their sins, for that matter. Well, she’s here to change that and goes about making them pay by treating them exactly how they treated her.

Or rather, not exactly.

She’s not that cruel.

So many amazing talents in one cast

For Furious to work, the entire cast has to be believable. This goes for the heroes and villains alike. And, as you’ve probably already gathered, the line between the two will blur as Furious evolves and the plot escalates. Most importantly, Emmy Rossum as Alice Black must work, and this is not an easy character to portray.

Alice Black does not always make the right choices, nor has she ever been handed anything or helped much in her life. She’s used to relying on herself and has gotten some bad habits and phobias along the way. Emmy Rossum (The Crowded Room) plays this role to perfection.

Not apologetic, but just going all in. I was on her side throughout. Even when she was a mess.

As the serial killer, who has many names before we hear her real name, we have the pleasure of Lola Petticrew. Admittedly, I was a little on the fence when it came to her. Only at first, though. I just had to recognize that what I didn’t like was the person, the actual character was trying to present to her victim.

Once you’re allowed to see the “real” character, it all made sense to me. It turns out Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing, Shadows) was just so damn good that she had me fooled right alongside her victims. I’m not sure I like what that’s indicative of.

Fierce supporting characters

Also, I have found a new actor I am absolutely in awe of: Quincy Tyler Bernstine. She portrays a senior FBI agent working in sex crimes, and because the serial killer is a former sex worker, she is the lead on the case. As such, she’s the boss of Alice Black, and seeing Emmy Rossum and Quincy Tyler Bernstine was pure magic.

Actually, Quincy Tyler Bernstine (White Noise, Ray Donovan) was amazing in every scene. Despite her flaws (of which she herself is very aware), she’s an absolute hero of mine. Especially as the story evolves and she needs to fight back in increasingly dangerous ways.

Also, an absolute highlight delivering fierce one-liners is Steve Way as Alden. No spoilers for his character, but you’re in for a real treat!

In other key roles, we see several actors that I have enjoyed watching for years. Especially Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire, Nightbitch) and Jake Lacy (All Her Fault, Apples Never Fall).

Furious comes from creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether. Previously, Elizabeth Meriwether also created the shows Dying for Sex, The Dropout, and New Girl. Oh yeah, she’s been working intensely for many years already.

With this latest production, she has moved into the crime thriller arena, and I do hope she stays here.

Star of the Hulu series, Emmy Rossum, is also an executive producer for Composition 8, along with Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk executive-produced and directed the first two episodes. Also directing are Karena Evans, Destiny Ekaragha, Cory Finley, Colleen McGuinness, and Beatrice Morgan.

Furious is one of the best shows I’ve watched in quite some time. And I’m saying that as someone who watches a lot of amazing series from all over the world and on various streaming platforms. Even good ol’ flow TV. Still, few have managed to keep me as engaged and without even one bad episode.

Do not miss out on Furious on Hulu. The crime thriller serial killer series premieres with its first three episodes. For the season finale, you’ll have to wait until August 31, 2026, but you’ll enjoy the ride there.
