EXTERRITORIAL is a new Netflix thriller with action and mystery as the other core genres. While at the U.S. Consulate in Germany to apply for a Visa, a woman’s son suddenly vanishes. Is something strange going on, or is she as confused as they claim she is?!

You’ll have to watch the movie to find out. Or rather, you could probably just Google it, but this Netflix movie is entertaining enough that I recommend watching it. Besides, you get all the classic villains, and an awesome woman as the hero, so it’s good fun.

She’s no Ordinary Mom… she’s a Cool Mom!

Sara (Jeanne Goursaud) is no ordinary single mom. She’s a former Special Forces Soldier who is getting ready to move from Germany to the U.S. with her son. While visiting the consulate in Frankfurt, her son, Josh, disappears without a trace.

Obviously, this is an absolute nightmare for any parent, but things are about to get both worse and much stranger. It appears nobody even remembers him ever being in the building.

Everyone at the Consulate is nice to Sara and tries their best to help her. They even want to keep the authorities out of it to avoid the press hounding this poor woman. After all, Sara worked alongside US soldiers in Afghanistan and has a history of PTSD.

And, in any case, Sara has no intention of leaving without her son.

Exterritorial (2025) – Review | Netflix Thriller

Never underestimate love

I know, I know, “never underestimate love” might sound a little fluffy to you. However, the stories about tiny moms lifting cars exist for a reason. When you fight for someone you love, you’re able to tap into unknown power and perseverance.

For Sara, there’s a problem with where her son disappeared. She’s German and in Germany, but at the US consulate, so the German authorities have no jurisdiction. In other words, it’s up to Sara to find Josh and get him back.

To avoid being forced to leave, Sara moves deeper into the labyrinth that is the huge consulate building. On her mission, she even comes across another woman (Lera Abova), who appears to also be in a very peculiar situation at the consulate.

The two join forces and make quite a team. And I think that’s all you need to (and should) know before checking out Exterritorial on Netflix.

Oh, you should know, however, that Jeanne Goursaud (Blood Coast, Dear Child) is extremely cool and awesome as Sara. So is the other woman she teams up with at the consulate, who is absolutely fascinating as portrayed by Lera Abova (Anna).

Also, Scottish actor Dougray Scott (Season 2 of Vigil) impresses (yet again) with his German language skills and American accent. Switching between these must have been quite wild.

Watch Exterritorial on Netflix now

Exterritorial on Netflix is a German production and comes from writer-director Christian Zübert (Bad Banks). I didn’t expect too much from this movie other than a fun action thriller.

However, I must admit that both the thriller and mystery elements were a lot more interesting than I expected. Also, the action scenes were cool and often more realistic than we usually see.

Sure, the ending isn’t too surprising, but the entertainment value was higher than I dared hope for. If you’re in the mood for a solid mystery thriller with great action scenes and a plot that should keep you guessing, then check out Exterritorial on Netflix.

Exterritorial is on Netflix from April 30, 2025.

Plot

When her son vanishes inside a US consulate, ex-special forces soldier Sara does everything in her power to find him — and uncovers a dark conspiracy.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
