Disclosure Day – Movie Review (4/5)

DISCLOSURE DAY is a Sci-Fi Thriller from Steven Spielberg, who is back at creating the movie magic I remember from my childhood. This is the Spielberg I love – and have missed more than I ever realized. Also, this cast is simply perfect. Read our full Disclosure Day movie review here and make sure you watch it in theaters!

DISCLOSURE DAY is the new Steven Spielberg movie, and as extremely great as my expectations admittedly were, he did not disappoint. I do wish I had only watched the very first teaser trailer (which I loved), as the other trailers gave away much more of the movie than I wanted to know before watching.

You will leave the theater a different person. In a very good way! Whether that feeling endures is up to each one of us. If we all allowed the message to take hold, the world could become a better place. I think we can all agree that more empathy could help the world of today.

This is the Spielberg I love

My expectations for Disclosure Day were almost extreme, so I was admittedly nervous that I could get disappointed. Of course, I should know that with a sci-fi thriller, Steven Spielberg is exactly where he creates movie magic.

If there is one thing some people may struggle a little with, it’s that we begin in the middle of a very hectic time. A young man (Josh O’Connor) is on the run, and lots of powerful people are chasing him. We don’t know why exactly, but he has stolen something that he wants to expose, and which they do not want exposed.

Basically, it’s like stepping into a scene from Minority Report, and trying to figure out what’s going on. Don’t worry, it doesn’t last long, but you will be catapulted into this universe. Maybe this is why so much of the storyline was highlighted in various trailers.

Again, I wish I had skipped those trailers. It didn’t ruin the movie for me, but it did take away (some of) the joy of discovering these story elements on my own.

Meanwhile, we meet a woman (Emily Blunt) who never quite feels at home where she is. That’s why she’s constantly moving and looking to try a career change. While the man has already done something that will change his life forever, the thing that will change the life of the woman happens in real-time as we watch her morning unfold.

You don’t need to know anything else before watching Disclosure Day at the movies!

Emily Blunt is perfection

Look, let me preface this next part by saying I loved the entire cast of Disclosure Day. Especially the key performances by Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth, Eve Hewson (Behind Her Eyes), and Colman Domingo (The Madness, Fear the Walking Dead).

Also, in smaller roles, Wyatt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Elizabeth Marvel (G20, Presumed Innocent), and Hettienne Park (The Beast in Me, The Outsider), to name just a few of the many wonderful actors in this movie.

However, to me, Emily Blunt absolutely stands out. Not just because she plays a key character (I would argue the key character), but also due to what she delivers. Not only does she have to exude love and empathy, but she also has to show fear and confusion, all while also delivering most of the funny moments with stellar comedic timing.

Of course, from seeing Emily Blunt in everything from Edge of Tomorrow to A Quiet Place, genre fans know that she can deliver on everything. Even while fighting, crying, or screaming. In Disclosure Day, she needs to bring all of these elements together.

And she does, in the most amazing ways.

Sometimes even while speaking Russian or Korean. Just sayin’!

Also, I must highlight the performance of Courtney Grace, who practically has the job of conveying what all humankind is experiencing in the final moments of the movie. Courtney Grace delivers the most heartwrenching, honest, and breathtaking portrayal, bare and simple.

Simply mesmerizing… expect to tear up while she is on the screen!

Steven Spielberg has always been one of my favorite filmmakers. To me, he is a magical storyteller and director who I feel helped shape not only my love of movies, but also many core values. Of course, he is also to blame for me hearing the Jaws theme any time I am swimming – even in an indoor pool. And I still love him.

Speaking of scores, which Spielberg movies have also been improved by, Disclosure Day has a wonderful score. Of course, John Williams is the composer, and I loved how it helped evoke feelings of wonder and marvel.

The actual story of this new sci-fi thriller also comes from Spielberg himself. The screenplay was written by David Koepp, who had already worked with Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Park (1993) and War of the Worlds (2005). Horror fans may also know David Koepp from Cold Storage (2026), Presence (2024), Secret Window (2004), and Stir of Echoes (1999).

At its core, this movie is all about human nature and empathy being our true life force. In other words, very classic Steven Spielberg. This sci-fi thriller feels like a companion piece to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which I am rewatching later today. Watching this 2026 movie gave me all the same tingling sensations of movie magic that his 1977 movie did.

DISCLOSURE DAY is out in U.S. theaters on June 12, 2026, and internationally the same week.
