We’re talking about a rather creative and patient serial killer, which is rarely a good combination for those chasing them. However, our title character just needs to get inside his head. Fortunately for us, we see both the detective, victims and the serial killer, so we’re in on it.

Aldis Hodge is Alex Cross
The title of this new Prime Video thriller series is the name of our main protagonist, Alex Cross. He is a brilliant D.C. homicide detective and forensic psychologist. Aldis Hodge plays the role and does a wonderful job. He is tough, but vulnerable, and brilliant, but has a few weak spots.
In season 1 of Cross, Alex is in mourning but also trying his best to move on with his life. A big part of this comes from trying to solve a new case. A sadistic serial killer is leaving bodies all over the city.
Of course, no one is connecting the dots (or bodies, as it were) at first. Especially as their deaths are made to look accidental or self-inflicted. Once Alex starts looking at the deaths, he finds too many strange things to accept.
As Alex and his partner, John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa) work to track down the killer, Alex Cross has a few personal issues as well. Mostly the fact that someone is clearly trying to hurt him and his grieving family. At first, it’s just flowers being sent to him, but then it gets sinister. Very sinister!
Watching a profiler at work
In Cross, the main driver is watching Alex Cross do his thing as a profiler. The combination of being a homicide detective and a forensic psychologist makes him uniquely capable of creating the perfect profile of the serial killer.
He gets into the psyche of the killer by looking at the victims and how he treats them. And finds them, for that matter. I don’t want to give away too much, but you’ll have an idea of who the serial killer is early on.
A few episodes in, the identity will be confirmed and we follow the killer closely.
I loved this about Prime Video’s latest thriller series. This serial killer is brilliant but not without flaws, which is exactly what Alex Cross needs to discover as well.
As already mentioned, Aldis Hodge (The Invisible Man) stars in the series, where his primary co-star is Isaiah Mustafa (It, Boy Kills World).
ISAIAH MUSTAFA AND OLD SPICE IN CROSS
Yes, there’s a nice little reference to Isaiah Mustafa’s iconic Old Spice commercials as well. It happens when Alex tells his partner that he smells like “Mothballs and Old Spice”. Now, that got me giggling!
Also in the cast are Juanita Jennings (The Deliverance), Alona Tal, Samantha Walkes (Orphan: First Kill), Caleb Elijah (True Story), Melody Hurd (Them), Jennifer Wigmore (Y: The Last Man), Eloise Mumford, and Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist).
Finally, I absolutely must highlight Johny Ray Gill. He plays Bobby Trey, a criminal we see again and again, as he acts in increasingly wacky ways! Very entertaining and absolutely terrifying.
Watch season 1 of Cross on Prime Video
This new Prime Video series is – as mentioned earlier – based on characters written by best-selling author James Patterson. The creator and showrunner of the adaptation is writer Ben Watkins (Hand of God).
The directors of the eight episodes are Stacey Muhammad (Queen Sugar, Guilty Party), Craig Siebels (Stitchers), and Nzingha Stewart (How to Get Away with Murder).
Everyone does an excellent job and I cannot wait for season 2 to come out. A second season of Cross has already been greenlit, and several new cast members have been revealed (including Scream star Matthew Lillard). Still, I expect we’ll still have to wait quite some time for it to come out.
We’re getting all eight episodes as season 1 of Cross premieres exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. If you’re able to not binge-watch this series, then you’re better than me. I simply had to watch all of it as fast as I could.
Cross Season 1 is out on Prime Video from November 14, 2024.
