CRAZY OLD LADY on Shudder is a Spanish Horror Movie (org. title: Vieja loca). A twisted story that keeps you guessing. Also, yes, it will make you uncomfortable in various ways. I loved that part of it, and it makes for a solid recommendation from me. Read our full Crazy Old Lady movie review here!
CRAZY OLD LADY is a new Shudder addition that you do not want to miss out on. However, it is also a very uncomfortable watch in many ways. Whether your weak spot is old people being confused and increasingly weird, actual torture, or just getting to the bottom of a mystery, this horror movie will touch on all of these!
With a runtime of just 94 minutes, this Spanish horror movie (org. title: Vieja loca) doesn’t run on for too long. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t escalate wildly in that runtime. Just when you think it can’t get any crazier or worse, it will change gears yet again. I have to give it kudos for that. Also, Carmen Maura is amazing in the lead (and title) role.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.
If you’re uncomfortable around irrational or weird people, then Crazy Old Lady will be a very efficient horror movie to watch. I tend to get a little nervous around people that I can’t read, and in the case of Alicia (Carmen Maura), we get someone who is all over the place.
Sure, she is senile, but that’s not what will ultimately be the scary part. Not at all. People can be senile and perfectly docile (for the most part), but not when you’re a woman like Alicia.
This is very bad for Pedro (Daniel Hendler), who gets a desperate call from his ex-girlfriend on a dark, rainy, and very stormy evening. She begs him to please check in on her mother, Alicia, as she is on the road and still many hours away from reaching her. Pedro is a good guy, so he agrees to do her this favor.
Big mistake. Huge, really.
Not only should Pedro be afraid, he will soon be terrified as he suffers the consequences. Alicia is confused, revealing very strange events from her past, and refuses to let Pedro leave. If this was all, it wouldn’t be so bad, but this is just the beginning of the ordeal for Pedro.

Crazy Old Lady was written and directed by Martín Mauregui (Argentina, 1985). For this movie, he already won a key film festival award, and I can easily understand why. This is such an amazing movie to watch with a crowd of like-minded genre fans during a film festival, but it does also work extremely well on a smaller screen at home.
Martín Mauregiu won Best Director in the Horror Competition at Fantastic Fest and was also an official selection at the Sitges Film Festival. Both are amazing accomplishments and very well-deserved.
All I can say is that I’m surprised Carmen Maura (Volver) hasn’t won all kinds of awards for Crazy Old Lady as well, because she is amazing in this. So is Daniel Hendler (Virus-32) as poor Pedro, who has to endure so much at the hands (among other things) of Carmen Maura’s “Alicia”. Much of the movie is focused on these two in an old house, and it works extremely well.
Even though this isn’t getting a higher rating, I absolutely recommend watching it. It just is not a very comfortable watch. At all. But it is a solid horror-thriller, so check out this Shudder Original.
