COLD CASE: WHO KILLED JONBENÉT RAMSEY is a new Netflix true crime documentary series with three episodes. As is typically the case with a cold case, we go through everything that has already been covered.
However, this time, there isn’t as much finger-pointing. Or rather, there is from the people interviewed, but the production isn’t skewed towards one definitive answer. Instead, it tries to cover all aspects of the case. Three fascinating episodes remind you why this case is still relevant.

This is still a cold case
As revealed by the title of Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey there are no definitive answers. The three episodes in this new true crime docuseries on Netflix don’t change that. So, if you watch this documentary expecting to get answers, you will be sorely disappointed.
Instead, this documentary series in three parts goes over all aspects of the case while interviewing many of those directly involved with the case over the past 28 years.
It all began on December 26, 1996, when John and Patsy Ramsey woke up to discover their youngest child, six-year-old JonBenét, was missing. What had been a lovely Christmas was now a nightmare come true. After finding a chilling ransom note, they contacted the police.
Later that very same day, John Ramsey himself is the one who discovered his daughter’s body in the basement. Despite police being present, they never managed to find her and directly asked the family to help search the house.
It was a strange and unprofessional move by the police if a crime was suspected. But, then again, it wasn’t initially perceived as a crime. However, that was about to change.
And the Ramseys would be the prime suspects for years!
The Ramsey family’s nightmare
In fact, to many people, they still are. Some believe the father John Ramsey (who is interviewed for this documentary series) is guilty. Others blame the mother, Patsy Ramsey (who has since passed away from cancer), and finally, some accuse their son, Burke Ramsey (who was 10 years old at the time).
Again, no definitive answers are given in Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey but the theories on why any one of the Ramseys would have murdered JonBenét do not make much sense.
Well, to me.
Along with John Ramsey, we also hear from John’s son from his first marriage, who doesn’t believe any of his family was involved either. Nor do several of the police officers who worked on the case.
Other police officers, however, continue to believe that the Ramseys were involved. They are also interviewed for this documentary. Again, this Netflix docuseries attempts to paint the full picture of what the case has been about this far.
A case tainted by police and media
If there’s one thing we should all recognize by now, it’s that the murder of JonBenét Ramsey is a very tainted case. The police were quick to accuse the family, which in turn also meant that other possibilities weren’t properly investigated.
At the same time, the media – following the lead of what the police detectives were saying – went with the same story. Again, this resulted in the public opinion also being skewed in one particular direction.
In the 28 years that have passed since that terrible day during the Christmas holiday when JonBenét Ramsey was murdered, many suspects have been brought up. More than once, the police (and, again, the media) felt certain that the answer had now come.
PLEASE NOTE – EPISODE 3 WARNING
In episode three, we hear tape recordings of John Mark Karr confessing to what he did to JonBenét Ramsey. It is in great detail and terrible to hear. There is a warning at the beginning of the episode, so please only watch and listen to this, if you can stomach it.
One of the more recent theories came with the 2016 CBS documentary that directly accused JonBenét’s brother, Burke Ramsey, of killing his little sister.
When watching the Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey docuseries on Netflix, it made me feel sick to my stomach about all those who have been accused.
Yes, maybe one of them is the actual killer. But then that also means that all the other people, who have been under accusation, are innocent. Okay, several of them were child predators, and I (quite frankly!) do not feel sorry for them.
Also, each false accusation takes focus away from finding the real perpetrator.

This new Netflix documentary comes from Academy Award-nominated director Joe Berlinger. I’m not always a fan of his productions (such as Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel) as they can be a little too focused on entertaining rather than informing.
Fortunately, for this three-part docuseries Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey he informs more than entertains. Of course, this case is already entertaining enough in itself, so there’s no need to add anything.
JONBENÉT RAMSEY AND MADELEINE MCCANN
Along with the JonBenét Ramsey’s case, Madeleine McCann is one that no one seems able to let go of. Of course, the two differ wildly in that Madeleine McCann has never been found whereas JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered within the first day. Still, any definitive answers seem to escape authorities for both cases.

I enjoyed how this series scrutinizes the law enforcement and media missteps that tainted everyone’s perspective. Also, it’s a strength that it poses a critical question: Will the Colorado authorities finally take the necessary steps to bring JonBenét Ramsey’s killer to justice?
Only once all these avenues have been thoroughly investigated, can anyone hope to offer her family the peace they need and deserve!
Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey is on Netflix on November 25, 2024.
