CAPE FEAR on Apple TV is a new series based on the 1991 movie. This, along with the casting, should be more than enough for you to watch. Plus, Scorsese and Spielberg are producers on it. As soon as you hear that iconic score and see the color-saturated visuals, you’ll feel right at home. And terrified. Read our Cape Fear series review here!

CAPE FEAR is an Apple TV series based on the 1991 movie, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Steven Spielberg. For this series, both return as executive producers. And I absolutely love that. Also, the casting is brilliant – not least the surprises that come along as it progresses!

The first eight episodes (out of ten) were watched for this review. I would have gladly binge-watched the entire series, but we’re not getting screeners for those final two episodes. That’s Max Cady levels of torture right there. I almost have to appreciate their sinister ways in that regard.

Anyway, watch it as soon as the episodes are released to avoid spoilers. There will be some huge ones down the line.

Intense in all the best ways

Whether you’re looking for intense characters (and actors’ portrayals of said characters) or fierce color-saturated imagery, you’re in for a treat with the Cape Fear limited series on Apple TV. Also, that iconic and bold score, which (for me) is all the way up there with JawsThe Exorcist, and Psycho, is used with intent!

In Apple TV’s new psychological horror thriller, fear does indeed take hold thanks to the core cast of Amy Adams, Javier Bardem, and Patrick Wilson.

Max Cady (Javier Bardem) is back for vengeance, and the Bowden family will feel this in all kinds of malignant ways. Max Cady is nothing short of a personified storm coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson).

As respectively defence lawyer and prosecutor in the case that put Max Cady behind bars, it was a thunderbolt of horror that hit them when the news of his release arrived. Max Cady may appear charming at first, but he is brutal in so many smart ways, never afraid of playing the long game.

Now, the Bowdens and Max Cady will face off as he returns to a life of freedom, and their lives of pure terror begin!

Cape Fear (2026) – Review | Apple TV Series

Javier Bardem as Max Cady? Hell yeah!

As much as I loved Robert De Niro as Max Cady in the 1991 movie, Javier Bardem manages to completely make this character his own. Often with little nods to De Niro’s portrayal as well, which I simply adored. Plus, the story explaining the accent of Javier Bardem works perfectly for this story, adding another layer.

Of course, I have always liked Javier Bardem, so I did expect that he would work well in this role. Just not this damn well. He delivers a performance that is nuanced, which is strange to say about a character who is a notorious killer. However, he has also been mistreated in life, and his charming ways are eerily efficient!

As the Bowden couple, portrayed by Jessica Lange and Nick Nolte in the 1991 movie, we now get Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson. Both deliver strong performances, but for me, Amy Adams absolutely steals the show!

In key supporting roles, we also see amazing talents. From beloved veteran actors like CCH Pounder (The Terror: Devil in Silver), Ted Levine (Shutter Island, The Alienist S2), and Ron Perlman, to young talents like Lily Collias (Good One), Joe Anders (1917, Lee), and Malia Pyles (Batwoman).

Fair warning, expect that you will get annoyed with these teen characters, and realize that you are meant to. And then look at the adults in their lives and recognize that they have terrible role models!

Cape Fear (2026) – Review | Apple TV Series

Bringing us this limited series adaptation of the iconic story is Nick Antosca, who serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the Apple TV production. Previously, Nick Antosca created genre shows such as The ActCandy, and A Friend of the Family, which were all based on true-crime events.

Also, he created the twisted and bold Netflix series Brand New Cherry Flavor and the brutal horror movie Antlers (2021). All of which meant my expectations for this Apple TV series were extremely high, and yet, I was not disappointed. Not one bit!

Also returning to the world of Cape Fear and Max Cady are the Academy Award-winning executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. They were the director and producer of the 1991 movie adaptation, respectively, which earned Oscar nominations for Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis.

For the record, the 1991 movie adaptation that serves as inspiration for this series was itself a remake. John D. MacDonald’s novel “The Executioners” was first adapted into a movie in 1962. Back then, it starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, who both returned to play different characters in the 1991 movie.

The 2026 Cape Fear series will premiere with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through July 31, 2026. If you want to avoid spoilers, I would watch the episodes as quickly as possible after they’re released.

The Cape Fear series will make its global debut on Apple TV on Friday, June 5, 2026.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
